High school roundup: Big win for East softball; Hornets take 2; SR soccer wins

SOFTBALL

MOUNT ULLA — Lily Kluttz drove in six runs and Maddie Roberts made a game-changing catch as East Rowan’s softball team beat West Rowan 9-6 to stay on top in the South Piedmont Conference.

Kluttz had a perfect day at the plate, 3-for-3, plus a walk, and she got her hits in clutch situations.

Kluttz blooped a two-run single in the first inning as the Mustangs took a 3-0 lead and stayed on top all night.

After West got back to 3-2, Kluttz hit a solo homer in the third.

She had a bases-clearing double in the fourth that put East ahead 7-2.

Roberts, the right fielder, made the game’s biggest defensive play in the bottom of the fourth, charging in for a shoestring catch when Emma Clarke hit a line drive with the bases loaded.

Madi Tigert was the winning pitcher. Seven different Mustangs scored.

East (11-2, 11-0) finished a season sweep of the third-place Falcons (8-5, 6-2). Central Cabarrus is in second place with one loss. East is scheduled to play the Vikings on April 11 and April 19.

SALISBURY — Salisbury pounded North Rowan 17-0 and 18-0 in Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference softball doubleheader.

In the first game, the Hornets scored 10 runs in the first and seven more in the second to bring the game to an early end.

Allie Peeler had three doubles and four RBIs. Katie Peeler hit a home run and scored three times.

Winning pitcher Ashley Yang had two hits and three RBIs. Addie Myers had two hits.

In the second game, the Hornets (5-6, 5-2) ended it after three innings with 11 runs in the first and seven in the second.

Winning pitcher Yang had two doubles and a triple in her three at-bats and drove in three. Katie Peeler had a double and knocked in two. Myers had a double and scored three runs. Jayla Robertson scored twice against the Cavaliers (0-6, 0-5).

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown beat South Iredell 7-4 in a Greater Metro Conference game on Wednesday.

The Wonders took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning.

Myla McNeely went 4-for-4 and scored two runs. Karma Little had three hits and three RBIs. Mady Baker had three hits and scored twice.

Isabella Butler pitched a complete game for the Wonders (4-5, 2-2).

 

SOCCER

SPENCER — Chloe Tracy scored three goals as South Rowan beat North Rowan in non-conference girls soccer on Wednesday.

Cailynn Withers had two goals and an assist for the Raiders (5-3).

Peyton Bell, Brooke Oehler and Ava Schleyer had a goal apiece.

Margo Maples made four saves for the shutout.

 

BASEBALL

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a close game and beat Salisbury 11-1 by the 10-run rule in Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference contest.

Cole Price, Aiden Mowery and Evan Koontz had hits for the Hornets (4-8, 3-4).

East Davidson (7-5, 5-0) stayed undefeated in the league.

MOUNT PLEASANT — South Rowan lost 7-3 at Mount Pleasant in Wednesday’s non-conference game.

Corbin Cross had two hits for the Raiders (7-7). The Tigers are 8-4.
