High school softball: Falcons sock 3 homers in regular-season finale; SPC tourney starts Monday

CONCORD — Reese Poole, Arabelle Shulenburger and EA Nance walloped home runs as West Rowan pummeled Robinson 12-0 on Friday.

West scored six runs in the second inning and was able to cruise.

Shulenburger pitched the five-inning shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Shulenburger stayed hot at the plate. She was 3-for-3 and also had a double. Poole drove in two and scored three with her two hits. Nance drove in two.

Ella Doby scored two runs and knocked in two. Lucy McLean Shelton had two hits.

West (17-6, 13-3) finished third in the South Piedmont Conference. Robinson (7-13, 4-12) tied for sixth with Lake Norman Charter.

West is at home on Monday against Lake Norman Charter for the first round of the SPC Tournament. Robinson plays at 2 seed Central Cabarrus.

CONCORD — Northwest Cabarrus pitcher Halee Ellis struck out 15 batters as Northwest Cabarrus beat Carson 5-1 on Friday in SPC action.

The Trojans (13-6, 10-6) pounded out 13 hits and finished fourth in the nine-team league. Carson (7-13, 4-12) finished eighth.

Northwest hosts 5 seed South Rowan in the first round of the tournament on Monday, while Carson plays at top-seeded East Rowan.

NEW LONDON — East had a strong finish to the regular season on Thursday with a 2-0 win at North Stanly, one of the top 2A teams.

Madi Tigert was the winning pitcher.

East (17-3) had two pinch-hitters come through in the sixth inning to score the game’s only runs.

Lily Kluttz got a hit to start the winning rally and went to third on a double by pinch-hitter Kimberly Troublefield.

Camryn Perkins delivered the pinch hit that scored the first run, and the second run scored on the same play on an error.

The Comets are 16-2-1.

East will host the semifinals and championship game of the conference tournament.
