Salisbury’s boys tennis team advanced five players to the upcoming individual state championships in Cary on May 10-11.

Jander Rodas-Palacios was runner-up in 2A Midwest Regional competitition held in Salisbury over the weekend.

Salisbury’s doubles team of Ethan McGee/Leo Schiavinato took third place in the regional, while the  SHS doubles team of Roarke Burton/Sean Archer placed fourth.

Salisbury’s Juan Salazar won his first-round match in the regional, but lost in the quarterfinals.

In the 1A West Regional in Elkin, North Rowan’s Hans Roemer won his first match, but lost in the quarterfinals.

In the 3A Midwest Regional in Concord, West Rowan’s doubles team of Layton Butler/Alex Keadle won one match before being eliminated.

West’s Steve Wilmot-Trevor Mervine doubles team lost in the first round. Kevin Sullivan lost a first-round singles match.

Dual team tennis

Salisbury is the only local team still standing after the first round of the dual team state playoffs.

The unbeaten Hornets host Newton-Conover in a 2A second-round matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

NCHSAA

The NCHSAA  announced plans on Thursday to create a 5A class.

That would result in major changes to the realignment process, conference assignments and state playoffs. The timetable for  change is August, 2021.

High school baseball

First-round playoff games are scheduled for Tuesday.

Second-round games are scheduled for Friday.

Pairings and seeds will be announced on Monday.

Carson, East Rowan, West Rowan, South Rowan,  Salisbury and Davie County are all expected to be in the playoffs.

Davie County has forfeited six early-season games, including one to Carson, one to South Iredell and two to West Rowan.

West Rowan’s record improves from 16-7 to 18-5, while Carson is now 23-2.

Top-seeded North Stanly beat No. 2 Uwharrie Charter 5-2 to win the Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament.

Top-seeded Cox Mill beat Northwest Cabarrus 7-5 on Friday for the South Piedmont Conference Tournament championship.

High school softball

First-round playoff games are scheduled for Tuesday, with second-round matchups on Friday. West Rowan, Carson, East Rowan and A.L. Brown are certain to be in the 3A playoffs.

Brantleigh Parrott pitched a no-hitter to lead Central Cabarrus to a 4-0 win against A.L. Brown in Friday’s South Piedmont Conference Tournament  championship game.

High school soccer

Salisbury and Carson will be in the state playoffs, and West Rowan might be.

First-round games are being played on Tuesday, with second-round action scheduled for Friday.

High school golf

Regional golf is set for Monday.

Salisbury and South Rowan players are among those competing in the 2A Midwest Regional at Pilot Knob in Pilot Mountain.

Salisbury qualified as a team. Hank Robins will be the first Hornet to tee off at 9 a.m. He’ll be followed by Will Fowler (9:10), Luke Graeber (9:20), Harrison Parrott (9:30) and Will Webb (9:40).

South Rowan’s Andrew Coward and Andrew Jackson qualified as individuals and have later tee times. Coward starts at 10:40, with Jackson starting at 10:50.

East Rowan and West Rowan  qualified as teams to play in the 3A Midwest Regional at the Club at Irish Creek. Action starts there on Tuesday.

Cole Mabry gets East started at 9:10 a.m. He’ll be followed by Alex Miller (9:20), Ethan Mastro (9:30), Austin Miller (9:40) and Colby Patterson (9:50).

Charlie Young will be the first West player on the tee at 10 a.m. Next will be Dalton Kepley (10:10), Jake Carlton (10:20), McGwire Owen (10:30) and Davis Tadlock (10:40).

Carson qualified two individuals. They’ll start early on No. 10, with Andrew Burke teeing off at 8:40 a.m., and Ethan Scarbrough starting at 8:50.

A.L. Brown’s Tyler Johnson tees off at 8:40 a.m. Next are Jackson Coward (8:50) and Jon Culp (9:00).

High school track

The Yadkin Valley Conference Meet was held on Friday at South Davidson.

North Rowan’s girls finished eighth. Senior Lakayla Birst scored all of the Cavaliers’ 18 points. She won the high jump (5 feet) and placed second in the 300 hurdles (50.88 seconds).

• Birst plans to sign with Fayetteville State this week.

North Rowan’s boys placed seventh in the YVC Championships with 26 points.

Adrian Rudisill took second in the discus (130 feet). Nautica Patterson placed third in the shot put (42 feet, 5 inches). Jasiyah Wilson was fourth in the 400 (56.52 seconds). Jabari Hogue was sixth in the 100 (12.09 seconds) and fifth in the 200 (24.26).

North Stanly’s girls took first place, while Albemarle’s boys were winners.

Next for county track and field athletes is regional competition.

The 2A Midwest Regional will be held at Surry Central on May 11.  The 3A Midwest Regional is set for May 11 in Monroe.

The 1A Midwest Regional (May 10) and the 4A Midwest Regional (May 11) will be held at Davie.

High school football

West Rowan defensive back JooJo Brush signed with N.C. Wesleyan on Friday.

College football

Defensive lineman MyQuon Stout (Carson) was named team MVP for football at Appalachian State’s awards banquet.

College basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson), who played his freshman season at Lander, has  signed to play at Davidson County Community College next season.

College track

Western Carolina sprinter Devaniel Dale (East Rowan) was named Men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer for the Southern Conference Championships. He won the 200 and 400 and competed on second-place 4×100 and 4×200 teams.

• Dale   was named    WCU’s  athlete of the week for all sports.

Coastal Carolina’s Cameron Butler  (West Rowan) was third in the 800 in the Winthrop Invitational in a career best 1:55.60.
