Area Sports Briefs: South soccer wins; Catawba baseball romps

CONCORD — South Rowan’s girls soccer team won 1-0 at Concord on Tuesday.

Chloe Tracy scored the goal for the Raiders.

Margo Maples made two saves for South in the South Piedmont Conference match.

South (6-4, 5-3) dominated shots on goal, but Gabby Claros kept Concord (2-11, 0-8) in the match with 13 saves.

GRANITE QUARRY — Northwest Cabarrus rolled 10-1 against East Rowan in Tuesday’s SPC match.

Hayden Koontz scored four goals for the Trojans (7-1, 5-1), while Megan Story scored three.

Lillian Jeffers scored the East goal, with Emily Garcia Lopez assisting.

Daisy Berry was credited with 18 saves for the Mustangs (5-9, 2-5).

 

COLLEGE BASEBALL

SALISBURY — Catawba pounded Belmont Abbey 17-6 in a non-conference game played at Newman Park on Tuesday.

Sam Hunter, Bo Rusher (Salisbury), Logan Rogers (Carson) and Drew Robertson drove in three runs each for the 21st-ranked Indians (30-9).

Cooper Bryson and Dylan Driver (Carson) had triples.

Mason Gwyn (5-1) was the winning pitcher. The Indians made it easy for him with an eight-run first inning.

Belmont Abbey is 20-16.

Catawba’s weekend series with Anderson is now scheduled for a 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon doubleheader and a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.

In Brevard’s 12-10 win against Methodist, former local stars CP Pyle (Carson) and Jackson Deal (South Rowan) had epic games.

Both hit home runs.

Methodist’s Deal was 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs.

Brevard’s Pyle was 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs.

 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Wingate swept Catawba 5-1 and 6-0 in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader played on Wednesday at Whitley Field.

Grace Flynn had three hits for the Indians (19-23, 7-11) in the first game, while Riley Tucker had two.

Catawba was held to three hits in the second game by the 10th-ranked  Bulldogs (39-6, 17-1).

Chloee Stoner (North Rowan) is batting .346 with 23 runs scored for Guilford.

Stoner hit a home run on Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan.

 

HS GOLF

Salisbury won against Kings Mountain with a score of 148 on Wednesday.

John McCoy, Jackson Sparger and Sam Goodman shot 36s. Warren Fesperman shot 40.

 

LOCAL GOLF

GARS members played at Sapona in Lexington.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 68.06.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Dickie Peeler with a net of 58.88.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was David Schenk with a net of 63.12.

 Low ‘D’ Flight player was Tim White with a net of 61.36.

Peeler shot a 74 to win low gross, while White won low net.

Larry Luther was Super Senior with a net of 63.85.

The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice event.

The first-place team was Bill McKinney, Heather DePalma-Spivey and Todd McCleary.

The second-place team was Tim Vanhoy, Claude Honeycutt and David & Azalee Huneycutt.
Azalee Huneycutt had closest to the pin, while Byron Sheesely had the longest putt.
