CHINA GROVE — East Rowan’s softball team beat Carson 8-0 on Tuesday to wrap up the South Piedmont Conference title.

East finished one game ahead of Central Cabarrus and is two up in the loss column on West Rowan. It’s the first regular-season league championship for the Mustangs since 2013.

Camryn Perkins did the work in the circle for the Mustangs.

Maddie Roberts circled the bases for an inside-the-park homer when a Cougar missed on an attempt at a diving catch.

Eleni Miller smacked three doubles. Kimberly Troublefield had three hits, with a double and a triple. Madi Tigert had a double and a triple. Gracianna Barber had a double.

East (16-3, 15-1) scored five runs in the fourth inning to break it open.

Carson (4-17, 3-12) got hits from Madison Clark, Rylee Hedrick, Celia Sifford and Caroline Snow.

Caylee Snow pitched for the Cougars and had five strikeouts with no walks.

Sixth in the 3A West RPI rankings, East is scheduled to play a non-conference game at North Stanly on Thursday.

Carson has one SPC game left at Northwest Cabarrus on Friday.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan rolled 11-1 against South Rowan in Tuesday’s SPC match.

It was Senior Night for the Falcons’ only senior, Emma Clarke.

“So many tears,” West coach Jimmy Greene said. “Big crowd, lots of gifts.”

West pitcher Arabelle Shulenburger took charge of the game in the circle and at the plate.

Shulenburger hit for the cycle in a five-inning game, a remarkable feat. She scored two runs and drove in three.

“Single, double, homer and then the triple for the cycle,” Greene said. “She put on a clinic on how to hit. Same swing every time and got the results.”

Greene believes it was the first cycle of his coaching tenure. His check of the scorebooks said Hunter Gibbons and Parker Greene came closest. Gibbons didn’t get the triple. Greene didn’t get the double.

Taylor Keller, Kayla Burns, EA Nance and Riley Haggas had two hits each for the Falcons (15-6, 11-3). Keller, Burns and Nance drove in two apiece.

Shulenburger struck out four with no walks, and held the Raiders to four hits.

Danica Krieg, Carmen Thomas, Lexie Ritchie and Leisha Carter had hits for South (8-10-1, 7-8). Krieg had the RBI.

Ninth in the 3A West RPI rankings, West still has scheduled SPC games with Concord and Robinson.

South is scheduled to play non-conference at Hickory Ridge on Wednesday and at SPC opponent Lake Norman Charter on Thursday. South is 31st in the 3A West RPI rankings, so those will be big games.

CONCORD — Central Cabarrus scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-1 SPC win against Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday.

Chloe Phillips and Taryn Jenkins slugged homers for the Vikings (15-6, 13-2), who are scheduled to finish SPC play against Concord.

TROUTMAN — Campbell Schaen pitched a shutout and recorded her 400th strikeout as Mooresville beat South Iredell 10-0 on Tuesday.

Mooresville (19-0) is the Greater Metro Conference champion.

The Wonders (5-13, 3-9) scored seven in the first inning, but the Wolverines clawed their way back into it.

Karma Little had three RBIs. Kaylee Dunning had two doubles. Myla McNeely had four hits and scored three runs.
