Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly medalist at Irish Creek

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 66-72 — 138 at The Club at Irish Creek and was medalist of the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s North State High School Challenge .
East shot 597 on Friday and Saturday to place fourth behind Myers Park, Christ School and Cannon School. Cannon School’s Michael Sanders shot 70-69 — 139 to finish one shot back of Lyerly.
Other scores for East were Logan Shuping 74-73 — 147; Bryson Sprinkle 74-80 — 154; Christopher Queen 77-81 — 158, and Ben Rollnis 78-81 — 159.
Shuping tied for 11th.
Cannon’s Michael Childress shot 75-78 — 153.
Concord’s Walker Cress finished at 146 to tie for seventh, and Concord’s Stephen Carroll was tied for 13th at 148.

Prep soccer
Devynne Brown scored for East Rowan in Friday’s 3-1 loss to West Rowan.

In Carson’s 3-3 tie with Concord on Friday, Cierra Josey scored twice, and Hannah Smith had one goal.

Gray Stone won 2-1 against Woods Charter on Saturday in Chapel Hill.
Steffi Dejak and Annie Habeeb scored goals. Habeeb also had an assist.

Prep baseball
Carson’s Chris Cauble picked up his 296th career win in Rowan County on Friday when the Cougars won 9-4 at Concord.
Cauble, who got 136 wins at West Rowan prior to his coaching tenure at Carson, moved into first place all-time for Rowan high school baseball coaches.
Bill Kesler coached 295 wins at North Rowan.

Prep basketball
The South Carolina boys and girls teams swept North Carolina in the Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic on Saturday.
The all-star games were played at Socastee High in Myrtle Beach.
The S.C. boys won 114-91. Darlington’s Frankie Johnson scored 14 points and was MVP.
West Rowan’s Mike Gurley was the head coach of the N.C. all-stars, while North Rowan’s Jalen Sanders played for N.C.
Sumter’s Jessica Harris scored 16 points and was MVP of the girls game. S.C. won 78-77.

MLB
Jerry Sands (Catawba) was the DH on Saturday for the White Sox and had hits off two of the L.A. Dodgers’ best pitchers.
Sands had a second inning, two-out, run-scoring single off Clayton Kershaw. He drilled a first-pitch fastball to left field, scoring Todd Frazier for a 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, Sands singled off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen and scored on Tyler Saladino’s two-run homer.
Chicago won 4-2. Sands is hitting .211 this spring in his bid to make the club.

Catawba lacrosse
Josh Reedy scored six goals to lead Catawba’s men to a 17-6 win against Mars Hill on Saturday.

Youth soccer
The FCCA U12 soccer team, the Green Dragons (2-4-1), won against a regional opponent, 7-3.
Scoring for the Dragons were Christopher Portillo and Ben Childress with three goals each and Reed Brixey with one.
Luis Aveliz and Ben Sweet led the defense.
