It just wasn’t meant to be.

As planned on the Rowan-Salisbury School System’s original calendar, students won’t have classes Monday.

On Sunday afternoon, Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent Lynn Moody called off classes for Monday because of predictions of winter weather. When she made the decision, however, she was canceling a weather makeup day. Students were originally scheduled to be off because of the President’s Day holiday.

“This one was an extremely difficult call,” Moody said. “Snow is a little easier to deal with, but ice comes quickly and makes things more difficult.”

Weather forecasts were a compilation of  nearly every type of precipitation. On Sunday evening, the National Weather Service was predicting snow starting late Sunday night and transitioning to sleet by Monday morning. Freezing rain was also predicted. By late morning, precipitation is projected to turn entirely to rain.

The National Weather Service on Sunday night was projecting a trace of ice and half an inch of snow.

With Monday’s classes cancelled, school system leaders will need to decide when to have a makeup day. Moody mentioned the possibility of having classes on a Saturday before the year ends or spring break. She hasn’t yet decided which option or which day would be best.
