Area Sports: Salisbury tennis, West and South volleyball in action

Salisbury takes on Hendersonville today in the 2A Western Regional final in girls tennis.
Both teams are undefeated. The match will be played at 11 a.m. at the Lake Norman Tennis Center.
HS volleyball
West Rowan and South Rowan are back in action tonight at home in the third round of the volleyball state playoffs.
Fifth-seeded South (27-1) breezed past Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday and hosts West Stokes (24-5) in a 2A matchup at 6 p.m.
Top-seeded West Rowan (26-0) survived a five-set match on Tuesday against A.C. Reynolds and plays T.C. Roberson (24-3) tonight at 6 p.m.
Men’s basketball
Catawba earned the third spot in the 2019-20 South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball preseason poll as voted by the league’s head coaches.
Catawba also placed Marcell Haskett on the preseason All-SAC first team and Devin Cooper on the preseason second team.
Queens claimed eight first place votes and is the preseason favorite. Lincoln Memorial grabbed three first place votes and are second. Lenoir-Rhyne was tabbed sixth, but claimed the other first place nod.
The 2019-20 men’s basketball season gets underway on Nov. 1-2 when Lincoln Memorial travels to St. Joseph, Mo., for the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.
The rest of the SAC teams will tip off their seasons Friday, Nov. 8. Catawba begins play against UNC Pembroke in Florence, S.C., at 1 p.m.

Women’s basketball
Catawba was picked sixth in the 2019-20 South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball preseason poll.
Cataba’s Talia Barnes was voted a preseason first-time All-SAC pick with Taisha DeShazo earning a spot on the second team.
The 2019-20 women’s basketball season gets underway on Friday, Nov. 8.

College soccer
In a non-conference road match, Catawba’s women (10-2-2, 5-1-2 SAC) defeated Limestone (8-7, 7-2 CC) 1-0 on freshman Callie Hammond’s overtime goal on Wednesday. Catawba’s women are ranked sixth in the regional poll that was released on Wednesday.
Mid. school hoops
North Rowan’s girls won 51-19 against Mooresville.
Brittany Ellis scored 13 points. Bailee Goodlett and De’Mya Phifer scored 10 points each.Dasia Elder scored eight, and Anaya Gaiter added six.

Hannah Waddell scored 19 points to lead Erwin’s girls to a 40-34 win against Corriher-Lipe. Allie Martin scored 12 points, while Kori Miller had eight.
Jamyrah Cherry scored 14 to lead the Yellow Jackets.
