Carson girls

TROUTMAN — Carson’s girls won again on Friday, their seventh victory in a row.

The Cougars (23-1, 9-1) beat South Iredell, 69-50, to close the North Piedmont Conference regular season.

Carson has won 69 games during the last three seasons.

South Iredell (5-16, 1-9) got 18 points from Sarah Nelson, but finished in a tie for fifth with East Rowan.

Offensively, it was a typical game for Carson, which put four in double figures. McKenzie Gadson, Ellie Wilhelm and Maci Cooper scored 14 each. Colbie Perry had 11.

Ten Cougars scored.

Carson will have a first-round bye in the NPC tournament and a lofty seed in the 3A state playoffs.

“Our effort was very good, but we really struggled from the beginning,” East coach Kevin Holland.

Zee Winford, the defensive stopper who dislocated a shoulder earlier this season, had surgery on Friday.

A bright spot for the Mustangs was Caroline Houpe, who scored a season-high 14 points.

East, which tied for fifth, probably would have to win the NPC tournament to make the 3A playoffs.
