Area Sports Briefs: Tennis, volleyball reaching crunch time; soccer pairings coming Wednesday

Only four girls tennis teams are left in the 2A West playoff bracket.
Surry Central is at Salisbury Monday afternoon, with the winner taking on the Maiden-Hendersonville winner for the regional championship.

Gray Stone is still alive in the 1A West bracket and hosts East Surry on Monday.

In the 3A West bracket, Cox Mill plays at Concord on Monday, with the winner moving on to face Marvin Ridge or Charlotte Catholic.

Davie County’s Laura Becker reached the state semifinals in the individual tournament before losing on Sunday.
High school cross country
State championships in all classifications are set for Saturday in Kernersville, starting with the 2A boys race at 10 a.m. and finishing with the 3A girls at 4:30 p.m.
High school boys soccer
Playoff pairings are expected to be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
The first round of the playoffs is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3. Salisbury will be at home.
High school volleyball
The 3A West bracket is down to four teams.
Third-seeded Carson will be on the road at second-seeded West Henderson on Tuesday.
The winner of that matchup takes on the Marvin Ridge-Watauga winner in Thursday’s regional final.
State championships are Saturday at Raleigh’s Reynolds Coliseum. The 3A championship game is at 7:30 p.m.
Matchups Tuesday in the 3A East bracket are Conley-Southern Alamance and Chapel Hill-Cleveland.

West Davidson is one of the four teams left in the 2A West bracket and goes to Newton to play Fred T. Foard on Tuesday.
Also still alive in the 2A West are West Iredell and Hendersonville.

Romar Morris (Salisbury) had another big night on returns in Calgary’s 29-21 loss to Winnipeg on Friday.
Morris returned five kickoffs for 133 yards and seven punts for 71 yards. He also had two receptions for 8 yards.

Jumal Rolle (Catawba) is a starting cornerback and has made 43 tackles, four breakups and two interceptions for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Overseas basketball
Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is averaging 13.3 points and 4.5 assists for the Den Bosch New Heroes (4-1) in the Netherlands.
NFL
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) made three tackles for Pittsburgh in Sunday’s win against Cleveland.

Rookie Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) starts at right tackle for the Oakland Raiders.

Chris Smith (West Rowan) is the backup for Cleveland at left defensive end behind Myles Garrett.
Local golf
In a McCanless Couples event on Sunday, Walt Kincaid and Azalee & David Huneycutt emerged victorious.
Calvin Smith and Pam & Ralph Carver came in second.
Mary Seaford just missed a hole-in-one and was closest to the pin on No. 3.
Smith had the longest putt.
Sacred Heart athletics
Sacred Heart’s jayvee soccer team finished up the season with a 2-all tie in a home match with Salisbury Academy.
Simon Mueller and Alex Robinette scored for the Dolphins. Patrick Beal was solid in goal.

Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team completed the fall season by winning the PECSAA championship.
Sacred Heart defeated Salisbury Academy, 5-0, with John David Bonilla scoring three goals. Drew Hansen scored two goals. Jeffrey Sithong had the shutout in goal.
The Dolphins (10-1) won against Ellis Middle, 7-5 in their last game. Bonilla and Hansen had three goals each. A.J. Flynn scored a goal.

Sacred Heart hosted Salisbury Academy, Erwin and St. Pius in the last cross country meet of the season.
Top female runners were: 1. Maggie Antosek (SA) 14:35, 2. Katherine Otten (Erwin) 15:16, and 3. Angie Landeverde (SHCS) 16:26.
Top male runners were: 1. Carson Ritchie (Erwin) 13:22, 2. Braulio Mercado (SHCS) 13:32, and 3. Mitchell Diamond (St Pius) 13:44.
College football
Sewanee’s Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had 5 tackles and an interception in Saturday’s 27-14 win against Rhodes.
College golf
UNC Greensboro’s men’s team won the Grandover Collegiate by 10 strokes.
The Spartans shot 5-over.
Sophomore Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 68-68-77 and finished in second place at 3-under.
College cross country
Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) placed eighth in Saturday’s Conference USA Championships. Marchinko ran the 8K in 24:20.
Hickory Ridge grad Alex Cornwell finished 16th and helped Charlotte finish second.
College soccer
Lenoir-Rhyne’s men won a tiebreaker with Queens and will be seeded first for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Carson-Newman is seeded first for the SAC women’s tournament and hosts No. 8 Wingate.
Seeded fifth, Catawba’s women will play at No. 4 Anderson in Tuesday’s first round.
