Area Sports Briefs: West, East girls get SPC wins

West Rowan’s girls stayed in first place in the South Piedmont Conference by beating Robinson, 52-38, on the road on Friday. The Falcons (12-2, 9-0) got 17 points from Egypt Alexander, 13 from Khaila Hall, and 10 from Taylor Martin.

East Rowan’s girls won 48-35 against Cox Mill on Friday in Granite Quarry.
Shenell Pharr scored 22 points and had seven steals for the Mustangs (9-7, 4-6 SPC), who avenged an early-season loss to Cox Mill.
Lauren Weisensel had 13 rebounds for East. Jocelyn Lowe had four steals and seven rebounds. Rachel Barker led the Chargers wih 14 points.

Davie County’s girls won 48-45 against Mount Tabor in CPC action on Friday. Ashlyn Hampton scored 20 points, and Madison Zaferatos had 11.

Jaira Shears scored 20 points to lead Hickory Ridge to a 49-43 SPC win against Concord.

Prep boys basketball
Cox Mill scored 29 points in the second quarter, built a 51-13 halftime lead, and rolled to a 63-30 win against East Rowan.

Jordan McKenzie scored 23 for the Bulldogs.
Caleb Mauldin scored 26 for West. Martavio Rankin had 10 points, and Austin Love had eight.

Concord sophomore Rechon “Leaky” Black committed to UNC following Friday’s 74-65 SPC win against Hickory Ridge.

Mount Tabor beat Davie County 93-64 in Mocksville on Friday in CPC action.
Heath Slabach scored 17 for the War Eagles, and Cooper Wall had 15.
Cayse Minor led the Spartans with 26 points.

Jaylon Neal scored 16 to lead the Wonders.
Mark Sherrill paced the Titans with 20 points.

Jayvee girls
Carson’s girls won 33-20 against Central Cabarrus.
Nancy Gamewell scored nine points, Zoie Lee had six, and Montana Gurganious and Katie Jewell added five each for the Cougars (13-0). Defensive standouts were Tayler Harwood, Brooklyn Smith and Sarah Musselwhite.

Catawba, LC home
Catawba is home for a SAC doubleheader today against Lincoln Memorial.
The women’s game is at 2 p.m.
Livingstone is home for a CIAA doubleheader today against Shaw. The women’s game starts at 2 p.m.

The 8th-grade basketball tournament starts today at North Rowan High with first-round matchups.
