High school sports roundup for Wednesday: Hornets lose soccer showdown to WD

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls soccer team lost 2-0 to West Davidson in Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference battle at Ludwig Stadium.

“We played with a ton of heart, but West Davidson is just a bit ahead of us in most regards,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “Still, we competed on all three levels for the full 80 minutes. The first goal we conceded was super soft, but we still battled.”

The Hornets (7-3-1, 5-2) got strong play from Stella Koontz, Lola Koontz and Stephany Quintero.

“Stella is having a Defensive Player of the Year-worthy campaign and again and again thwarted a West Davidson attack that has been on a roll for the last 10 matches,”Parrish said. “Lola maintained her high level in conference play. Stephany played very well in lengthy minutes.”

West Davidson (14-0-1) is second in the 2A West RPI rankings. The Hornets are 14th.

Salisbury plays at Lexington at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

 

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

LEXINGTON — Salisbury won Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Lexington Golf Club.

The Hornets shot 162 in windy conditions.

Scorers were Jackson Sparger (39), Warren Fesperman (39), Bo Brincefield (41) and John McCoy (43).

McCoy shot 71 in the 18-hole North Carolina High School Invitational at Treyburn Country Club in Durham on Tuesday and tied for sixth.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Salisbury’s boys tennis team picked up an easy Central Carolina Conference win against North Rowan on Wednesday.

Five matches were walkovers.

In the four contested singles matches, AJ Jarrell, Bryant Davis, Ben Lawson and Owen Hammill won for Salisbury (14-1).

Hammill, a freshman, won 8-0 for his first career win.

The Hornets are second in the 2A West RPI rankings.

CONCORD — Carson won 8-1 at Robinson on Wednesday in South Piedmont Conference action.

The Cougars (7-8, 7-8) got singles wins from Karson Sloop, Austin Atwell, Will Welch, Griffen Bowman and Andrew Carter.

Sloop/Atwell, Welch/Bowman and Carter/Elijah Copic were doubles winners.

Carson is 24th in the 3A West RPI rankings.

HUNTERSVILLE — East Rowan lost to league-leader Lake Norman Charter 6-3 in South Piedmont Conference action on Wednesday.

East (9-7, 9-7) .got singles wins from Will Kesler at No. 4 and Josh Gardner at No. 6.

Gardmer/Preston Stephens won at No. 3 doubles.

 

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

OAKBORO — East Rowan won 2-1 at West Stanly in an exciting non-conference game on Wednesday.

Lily Kluttz scored both runs for the Mustangs (15-2) in a game that went nine innings.

Kady Collins drove in Kluttz in the fourth for a 1-0 lead, but the Colts (13-7) tied the game in the sixth.

East scored the deciding run in the top of the ninth when Camryn Perkins knocked in Kluttz. Chloe Shank’s double moved Kluttz to third base.

Madi Tigert pitched eight innings for the win. Perkins pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for the save.

East has moved up to third in the 3A West RPI rankings.

CHINA GROVE — West Rowan used a nine-run second inning to overwhelm Carson 11-0 in South Piedmont Conference softball on  Wednesday.

Arabelle Shulenberger breezed to the win, allowing one hit in five innings. She struck out seven and walked one.

McKenzie Powers had the only hit for the Cougars (3-15, 2-11).

West (13-6, 9-3) got three RBIs from Riley Haggas and two from Kayla Burns and Reese Poole.

The Falcons had 12 hits, with Poole, Taylor Keller and EA Nance getting two apiece.

West is ninth in the 3A West RPI rankings.

DENTON — Salisbury scored six runs in the fifth inning and trounced South Davidson 10-3 in Central Carolina Conference action on Wednesday.

Ashley Yang had a triple and four RBIs. for the Hornets (8-7, 7-3).

Addie Myers had three hits, while Tijah Sims, Jayla Robertson and Allie Peeler had two each.

Taliyah McCombs knocked in two runs.

Katie Peeler allowed four hits and struck out 15 Wildcats (8-4, 6-3).

Salisbury is up to 36th in the 2A West RPI rankings.

 

BASEBALL

CONCORD — Carson scored seven runs in the fourth inning and smashed West Cabarrus 10-1 in Wednesday’s non-conference game.

Carson pounded 13 hits and played errorless defense.

Jayven Parks went 3-for-3 with a homer, double and five RBIs to lead the Cougars. Parks is batting .383 with a team-leading 20 RBIs.

Corbin Hales, Caden Lewis and Will Bradshaw had two hits each.

Bryson Shoemaker, Lewis and Bradshaw had doubles.

Gage Trexler pitched no-hit ball for five innings for the win. He struck out six and walked one.

Nolan Tovronik and Josh Bost pitched an inning apiece.

Carson (12-8) is 22nd in the 3A West RPI rankings.

SALISBURY — There weren’t many positives for Salisbury in Wednesday’s 11-0 non-conference loss to Reidsville.

Aiden Mowery had the only hit for the Hornets (9-10).

Salisbury is 37th in the 2A West RPI rankings. Reidsville (8-10) is 24th.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan reached the 20-win plateau by beating North Stanly 10-0 in Wednesday’s non-conference game.

East only had five hits but took advantage of six walks.

East (20-1) scored three runs in the first to take control and put away the Comets via the 10-run rule with a six-run sixth.

McCall Henderson drove in three runs for the Mustangs and leads the team with 31 RBIs. Cobb Hightower scored three and drove in two.

Logan Dyer and Braden Shive scored two runs apiece.

Joe Burleyson struck out seven in five innings for the win. Mason Phelps pitched the sixth.

North Stanly (19-3) is third in the 2A West rankings. East is No. 1 in 3A RPI.
