Area Sports Briefs: West, East strong in cross country meet

While they’ve usually run in the shadow of strong Carson squads this season, East Rowan and West Rowan also have good cross country teams.
They had a chance to prove it on Wednesday.
In the United Way Invitational in Newton, West Rowan’s boys placed second in a 19-team field and East Rowan was third.
Top runners for West were Andrew Burgess (7th, 16:40, Cameron Butler (17th, 17:21), Cade Harrill (17:46), Michael Anton (17:55) and Oscar Bautista (18:05).
Leading East were Sean Incardona (15th, 17:15), Nikolas Pillsbury (17:42), Chance Brown (17:45), Devaniel Dale (17:48) and Ross Alexander (17:49).
Asheville won the meet with a score of 26. West (137) edged the Mustangs (142) for second place.

In the girls race, East Rowan finished ninth and West Rowan was 10th.
Leading East’s girls were Faith Faller (10th, 20:13), Faith Blume (25th, 21:34), Anna Louise Alexander (22:35), Shalea Vanhoose (24:03) and Alex Avalos (24:08).
Leading West’s girls were Josie Heglar (6th, 19:54), Brieanna Owens (22:49), Tempest Robbins (23:07), Rustyn Orbinson (23:49) and Brooke Suddeth (23:51).

Prep volleyball
Carson hosts Cox Mill in SPC volleyball tonight at about 6 p.m.
Cox Mill is undefeated. Carson’s only loss was at Cox Mill in the first meeting.

Prep football
East Rowan hosts West Rowan at 7:30 p.m. tonight in a special Thursday game that will be broadcast live by Time Warner Cable Channel 23.

Prep tennis
The South Piedmont Conference tennis tournament to determine regional qualifiers was played at Concord’s Les Myers Park.
West Rowan freshman Payton Holt finished second in singles, losing to Cox Mill’s Sara Jiang in the final.
Holt won eary matches by 10-0 against Hickory Ridge’s Sara Melton and 10-2 against Concord’s Meg Aldridge.
Holt won 6-1, 6-0 against Carson’s Emily Sloop in a semifinal.
West Rowan’s MacKenize Koontz won twice in singles before being eliminated by a 6-2, 6-3 loss to East Rowan’s Angel Scialdone.
Carson’s Sloop and Scialdone were singles qualifiers for the upcoming 3A Midwest Regional, also to be played at Myers Park.
Carson’s doubles team of Sierra Fesperman/Gabi Jolly rolled into the regionals.
Carson’s doubles team of Maddy Pepper/Margaret Correll won two close matches against West’s Tabby Landy/Ivy Rabon (10-8 and 11-9) and qualified for the regional.
East’s doubles team of Shannon Mahaffey/Lauren Weisensel was a regional qualifier.
West’s doubles team of Amber White/Abby Johnson was eliminated by losses to teams from Concord and Cox Mill.
More county tennis players qualified for regionals. They’ll be listed when results are available.
The 3A Midwest Regional will be played Oct. 23-24 in Concord .

Prep soccer
Jordan Osborne, Cristyan Cabrera and Leonel Ordonez scored goals for West Rowan in Wednesday’s 3-1 SPC win against East Rowan.
Will Peeler scored for the Mustangs.

Prep golf
A.L. Brown’s Ashlea Rose and Maggie May made the All-MECKA team.

8th-grade football
West Rowan rolled 46-6 against Erwin.
Jalen Houston rushed for 184 yards on six carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 80 and 48 yards to lead the Bulldogs (6-0).
Jay Joseph scored on runs of 6 and 8 yards. Tykese Warren scored on a 20-yard run, while Gerquavius Weeks scored on a 38-yard run.
Federico Cruz was 5-for-6 on PAT kicks. The o-line of Carter Jenkins, Colton Evans, Drake Martin, Jonny Hassard, Edwin Berrios, J.T. Bost, Mike Molenda, Daniel Sell and Bryson Coleman played well for the Bulldogs. The defense was led by Bryson Coleman, Chris Moore, T.K. Lark, Baiden Suddarth, Warren, Houston, Weeks, Calub Pope, Dylan Sigmon and Zeb Burns.
West is at North Rowan next Wednesday.

Knox won 26-6 against China Grove.
The Trojans (4-2) were led by Jabril Norman and Reggie Everhart.
Everhart had a 95-yard scoring run, and Norman scored on a 48-yard run. Both TDs were on fourth down. Kwalick Stafford scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Other offensive standouts were Jaiwan Poole, Lawon Blackwell, Zach Moten and Jacquez Smith. Smith caught two 2-point conversion passes.
Jadarius Wood led in tackles. Other top performers were Kameron Alford, Poole and Angel Quintero. Parker Chimeal lead special teams with thre tackles.

Southeast beat CorriherLipe 26-14 in an exciting contest. Scoring for the Patriots were Deandre Wilkerson (two TDs), Lavonte Jacobs, and Gavin Shehan. Adding a 2-point conversion was Tanner Stamp. Defensive standouts were Cole Dixon, Jake Nichols, Ryan Hendrix, Seth Eagle andNathan Griffin.

College soccer
Catawba’s women’s soccer team (3-9) lost 1-0 at Lees-McRae On Wednesday despite 12 saves by Angelica Pawlowski.

7th-grade football
Southeast beat Corriher-Lipe 30-14.
Scoring for the Patriots were Jacob Harris, Ethan Bancroft, Cameron Pyle and Alex London.
Andrew Rollins, Cameron Pyle and AJ Merriman added 2-point conversions.
Defensive standouts were Christian Morgann, Steve Smith, Brayden Peeler, Harrison Shell and Brayden Graham.
Southeast hosts China Grove next week.

Local golf
Kristi Laton won three club championships in Rowan County in the span of a week, taking a “Triple Crown” at Corbin Hills, McCanless and the Country Club of Salisbury.

College golf
N.C. State freshman Davis Richards (South Rowan) leads the Wolfpack in stroke average (71.7) after three events.

Richmond freshman Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 81-81-82 — 244, tied for sixth in the Whistling Straits Invitational, and helped the Spiders win the team title.

Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 77-71-67 — 215 and tied for 19th in the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills in Morganton.
Kennedy helped the Bulldogs finish second.
