St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Scholarships

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church awarded 27 scholarships for the 2015-16 school year. Scholarships are awarded to church members in increments of $500 per semester for four-year colleges or universities and $250 per semester for vocational or technical colleges. The total amount awarded for the 2015-16 school year is $24,000.

The following students received new $1,000 scholarships for the school year.

  • Grant McKinley Hoffner, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Western Carolina University as a freshman this fall. At East Rowan, he participated in football and wrestling. Hoffner plans to major in criminal justice. His parents are Melissa and Randy Hoffner of Salisbury.
  • Brett Alexandra Kesler, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at East Carolina University this fall. At East Rowan, she was a member of Junior Civitan, SADD and FBLA. Kesler participated in junior varsity basketball, tennis and the Broadway Review. At East Carolina, she is an honor roll student and a Red Cross volunteer. She is majoring in marketing and minoring in fine arts. Her parents are Tamara and Steve Kesler of Salisbury.
  • Tyler Raymond Rawson, a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, will be entering Wingate University this fall as a freshman. Rawson played varsity football and wrestling at Mount Pleasant. He will be attending Wingate on a football scholarship. He plans to join the Navy when he finishes college. His parents are Lisa and Bob Rawson of Gold Hill.
  • Ashton Marie Rogers, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Catawba College as a freshman this fall. At East Rowan, she played varsity volleyball and was All-County in volleyball. Ashton plans to major in biology. Her parents are Kim and Greyland Rogers of Salisbury

The following students received new $500 scholarships.

  • Alexander Calloway Askew, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall as a freshman. At East Rowan, Askew was a member of the cross country and track teams. He is an Eagle Scout. His parents are Paula and David of Gold Hill.
  • Dylan Turner Grubb, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall as a freshman. He plans to major in automotive technology. His mother is Julie Trexler and his stepfather is Scott Trexler of Salisbury. His father is Jimmy Grubb.
  • Anna Y. Lyerly, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall. At East Rowan, she participated in band. She plans to get an associate’s degree in arts. Her parents are Ada Lyerly of Salisbury and Bobby Lyerly.
  • Taylor Nicole Rogers, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall as a freshman. At East Rowan, Lyerly was a varsity cheerleader. She plans to major in radiography. Her parents are Kim and Trip Rogers of Salisbury.
  • Colton Wayne Trexler, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Nashville Auto Diesel College this fall. He plans to major in diesel mechanics. His parents are Sonya and Donnie Trexler of Salisbury.

The following students received a $1,000 renewal scholarship.

  • Sarah Caroline Agner, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. She is majoring in psychology. She is a dean’s list student and a YMCA employee. Her parents are Mary Jo and Tim Agner of Salisbury.
  • Lauren Elizabeth Allen, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at Lees McRae College this fall. She is majoring in wildlife biology. Her parents are Lorrie and Bob Allen Salisbury.
  • Justin Eugene Allen, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Western Carolina University this fall. He is majoring in sports management. His parents are Lorrie and Bob Allen of Salisbury.
  • Wyatt Christian Blume, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Belmont Abbey College this fall. He is majoring in business and received a wrestling scholarship to the college. His parents are Anne Kesler Blume and Kevin Blume Goldhill.
  • Emily Michelle Cleveland, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a junior at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington this fall. Cleveland, a dean’s list student, is a member of the college’s Assistance Dog Training Program and Paws 4 People volunteer. She is majoring in finance. Her parents are Richard and Chris Cleveland of 9710 Stokes Ferry Road, Gold Hill, NC 28071.
  • Summer Curlee File, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at Wingate University this fall. File is majoring in human services. Her parents are Donna and Gary Curlee of Salisbury.
  • Allie Henrickson McNeill, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall. She is majoring in management and society. Her parents are Chad and Renee McDaniel of Salisbury.
  • Holden Alexander Ingold, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Appalachian State University this fall. He participates in outdoor programs and Campus Crusade for Christ. He is a building sciences/construction management major. His parents are Julie and Gray Ingold of Salisbury.
  • Karley E. Ingold, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be senior at Appalachian State University this fall. At Appalachian State, she is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Elevation Church E-Group and is a Wind Body Group Fitness Instructor. She is majoring in elementary education. Her parents are Julie and Gray Ingold of Salisbury.
  • Annie Lee Justus, a graduate East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Appalachian State University this fall. At Appalachian State she is a member of Sigma Kappa and is a dean’s list student. She is majoring in elementary education. Her parents are Frances and Barry Justus of Salisbury.
  • Timothy Dalton Ludwick, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. He participates in intramural sports and is majoring in geology. His parents are Linda and Michael Ludwick of Richfield.
  • Sydney Christine Poole, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a junior at Pfeiffer University this fall. She was awarded a softball scholarship, and her honors include Pro-Grads, Angel Tree, and she is a dean’s list student. She is majoring in exercise science. Her parents are Sandra and Brian Poole of Salisbury.
  • Alan Jacob Rawson, a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, will be a junior at Catawba College this fall. At Catawba, he is a member of the baseball team and is a dean’s list student. He is majoring in business accounting. His parents are Lisa and Bob Rawson of Gold Hill.
  • Colton Wade Rogers, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. He is majoring in international studies. His parents are Kim and Greyland Rogers of Salisbury.
  • Evan William Rogers, a graduate of East Rowan High school, will be a sophomore at North Carolina State University this fall. He is a Goodnight Scholar, dean’s list student and participant in the college’s honors program. He participates in the Campus Crusade for Christ, and is double majoring in human biology and history. His parents are Lynn and Kendal Rogers of Salisbury.
  • Weston Grey Rogers, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. He is majoring in business. His parents are Kim and Greyland Rogers Salisbury.
  • Heather Joy Trexler, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the UNC-Charlotte Engineering Leadership Academy. She is majoring in civil engineering. Her parents are Lisa and Ty Trexler of Richfield.

The following student received a $500 scholarship renewal.

  • Walker Owen Fortson, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall. He plans to major in computer-integrated machining. His parents are Drema and Dean Fortson of Salisbury.
