Several local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
These residents are among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Monika Soler of Kannapolis and Regan Wike of Rockwell were initiated into University of North Carolina Charlotte chapter, and Catherine Ardoin of Salisbury was initiated into Campbell University chapter.
Justin Green of A.L. Brown High School was named best male vocalist at the N.C. State Show Choir Competition. The contest was held at William Peace University in Raleigh on May 5. Green’s chorus teacher is Lori Garber.
The Kannapolis City Board of Education was honored with two awards during its meeting on April 14.
Patrick Coughlin, president and CEO of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, presented school board members with the Chamber’s 2013 Sustainability Award. The honor is given to organizations that use innovative and environmentally sustainable practices to solve problems, save money and help the environment.
School board members also received the national MAGNA Award from the National School Boards Association. The Magna Award recognizes innovative efforts to boost student achievement and save taxpayer money through a unique partnership with Cabarrus County Government.
Amber Monroe, who teaches at Forest Park Elementary School, was named the Hilbish Ford teacher of the month.
A news release called Monroe “a wonderful example of what a teacher should be. She goes out of her way to help her students as if they were her own children. She keeps parents involved with what’s going on in the classroom and shows a great deal of concern and compassion for her students’ education. Parents appreciate her excellence in instruction and her kindness as a person.”

Hiers, a May 2013 graduate with political science and peace, war, and defense majors, is the son of Dora Hiers and Ernie Hiers of Kannapolis.
Leslie, a senior with a political science major and chemistry and biology minors, is the son of Robert Leslie and Robin Leslie of Salisbury.
Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in the college and professional degree programs who meet eligibility requirements. Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify.
