True freshman linebacker Keion Adams (Salisbury) is already on the field for Western Michigan. He’s played in three of the Broncos’ first four games.
Adams made his college debut in front of 71,000 fans at Michigan State and played in front of 67,000 at Iowa last Saturday.
Adams has been credited with four tackles, two against Iowa and two against Northwestern, and he was credited with a QB hurry against Michigan State.
Buddy Poole, voice of the Catawba Indians, experienced chest pains Friday, went to an emergency clinic in Kannapolis and was immediately transferred to CMC-NorthEast Hospital.
Poole said Monday that he has heart bypass surgery scheduled for today.
Lance Poole and Brooks Nash will handle the broadcast Catawba’s football game on WSAT-1280 from Carson-Newman Saturday. Lance Poole and Karen Myers will handle Thursday’s Catawba’s coach’s show with Curtis Walker on Thursday night.
Poole hopes to return to the broadcast booth later this season.
Second-ranked Salisbury escaped a major upset at Lexington on Monday.
The Hornets won the CCC game 6-5, with John Canipe providing the winning goal with 11 seconds left in regulation.
“Lexington did not deserve to lose and played with a collective heart and intensity that would’ve ben the envy of any coach,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.
Salisbury (11-1, 2-0 CCC) is home tonight against East Rowan.
West Rowan’s boys cross country team placed 12th out of 27 teams in the Hare & Hound Invitational in Matthews.
Jordan Bostian led the Falcons with a time of 17:26. Other times were Cameron Butler (18:30), Jacob Fleming (18:31), Joseph Ward (18:37), Wade Laing (18:49), Cade Harrill (19:10) and Dagan Williams (20:11).
Also competing for West were Miller Graham (19:42), Jesse Regrut (20:36), Daniel Winecoff (20:47), Harold Johnson (20:49), Clay Cranford, Cade Cranford, Dakota Goodson, Patrick Waldo, Thomas Webb and Dylan Morgan.
The West girls placed fifth out of nine teams. Rebecca Parker ran 20:02 to lead the Falcons. Other times were Josie Heglar (21;48), Kelly Jankowski (25:00), Emily Goddard (25:04) and Meghan Sloop (25:42).
The Rowan County youth team joined the Falcons at the event and placed fifth out of nine teams. Andrew Burgess ran 11:29 in a 3K. Also competing were Jonah Evans (12:33), Carter Roane (13:13), Zach Jaynes (13:48) and Jaxon Evans (17:29).
• The county meet is set for Dan Nicholas Park on Wednesday. Open races are at 3 p.m.
The boys championship race (top seven from each team) is at 3:45 p.m. The girls championship race is at 4:30 p.m. The awards ceremony is at 5:15 p.m.
The top 12 finishers are All-Rowan County.
In a 6-3 SPC loss to Central Cabarrus on Monday, South Rowan got wins from Sydnie Starnes, Cierra Hunter and Mariah Mason.
• In Salisbury’s 9-0 CCC win against East Davidson, singles winners were Kayla Honeycutt, Anna Flynn, Madeline Hoskins, Kathryn Rusher, Grace Steinman and Kathleen Mowery. Honeycutt-Flynn, Rusher-Steinman and Hoskins-Ruth Clement were doubles winners.
UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) is 11th after two rounds of the VCU Shootout in Richmond. Dixon has shot 70-74 — 144 and is at even par. The final round is today.
In the 7th American Legion Golf Classic played in honor of Gene Auten at Corbin Hills, the team of Ken Crooms, David Roueche, Tim Wheat and Steve Vail shot 53 and won the First Flight in a scorecard playoff with the team of Keith Dorsett, Rick Wilkes, Drew Davis and Steve Gegorek.
The team of Jim Fero, Lee Ketner, Gene Seaford and Mary Seaford shot 60 to win the Second Flight. The team of Mike McGowan, Mike McGowan Jr., Chris McGowan and Maro Cuellar shot 66 and won the Third Flight.
Closest to the pin winners were Dorsett (No. 2), Stephen Bullock (No. 5), Gegorek (No. 13) and Ronnie Eidson (No. 16). Crooms won longest putt on No. 9.
•The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format Sunday.
The winning team was Glenn Trexler, Frank Foster, Don Goodnight and Mary Seaford. The second-place team was Harry Owens, David Huneycutt and Walt and Kim Kincaid.
Owens won closest to the pin. Kim Kincaid won longest putt.
The FCCA Green Dragons (7-1) won regional games by 5-3 and 6-3 scores over the weekend. Will Webb was outstanding in goal. Ben Childress scored five goals. Maddox Goodnight scored three. Oscar Garcia, Wade Robins and Webb scored a goal each.

• Salisbury’s Academy’s jayvees won 4-0 against North Hills. Alexander Kennedy scored three goals. Will Fowler, Wade Robins and Charlie Barr set up the goals. Barr scored the other goal on a free kick from 25 yards. Walker Hartpence led the defense. Nicholas Peltz had the shutout in goal.
• Salisbury Academy’s varsity lost 2-0 to Hickory Christian.
• Salisbury Academy’s varsity won 4-3 against Statesville Christian. Jeremiah Whitaker scored twice, and Mitch Jeter and George Fisher had a goal each.
Emily Mann, Adam Drye and Ben Coulter led the defense for the Jaguars.
Salisbury Academy’s jayvees won 25-18 and 25-20 against Concordia.
Madeleynn Castor had 11 service points. Brittney Ervin had nine service points. Emily Cipolla added eight service points.
Erwin’s girls team earned its sixth victory on Monday by defeating China Grove 5-4. Winners in singles for the Eagles were Mia Graham, Lauren Weisensel, Destini Hamilton and Kristen Brady. Winning in doubles was the team of Hamilton-Brady.
