Local NAACP awards 16 scholarships during annual luncheon

The Salisbury-Rowan Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People awarded 16 high school students scholarships at their annual scholarship awards luncheon held June 2 at the Event Center at Livingstone College.
The scholarships are based on academic achievement, writing skills, community service and extra school-based activities.
The recipients are:
• Kiera Harding (Carson High), daughter of Pauline and Theodore Harding, will attend American Intercontinental University of Atlanta, Ga.
• Delvin Mills (Carson High), son of Sheila and Nasby Mills, will attend Western Carolina University
• Brittany Norman (Carson High), daughter of Mary and Alvin Harvell, will attend Appalachian State University
• Brianna Miller (Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Early College), daughter of Georgette Turner and Brian Miller, will attend University of North Carolina-Charlotte, not pictured in photo
• Tobi Holland (North Rowan), daughter of Derwin Holland and Allene McNeil, will attend North Carolina State University
• Serena Cowan (Salisbury High), daughter of Patricia Cowan, will attend North Carolina A&T State University
• Bryce Ford (Salisbury High), daughter of Sheri and Franklin Ford, will attend North Carolina A&T State University
• Jared Hardin (Salisbury High), son of Alib and Kenneth Hardin, will attend University of North Carolina-Greensboro
• Janaye Hargrave (Salisbury High), daughter of Ronnie Glover and Susan Hargrave, will attend North Carolina A&T State University
• Andrew Kennedy (Salisbury High), son of Miami and Eric Kennedy, will attend Morris College of Sumter, S.C.
• Dezirae Lee (Salisbury High), daughter of Vickie Mason and Toney Lee, will attend Fayetteville State University
• Robin Moulton (Salisbury High), son of Enid and Robert Moulton, will attend North Carolina State University
• Ny’Quamia Wells (Salisbury High), daughter of Lisa and Michael Wells, will attend Hampton University of Hampton, Va.
• Alina Baugh (West Rowan), daughter of Pamela and Jeffrey Baugh, will attend University of North Carolina-Charlotte
• Bre Anna Griffin (West Rowan), daughter of Jennifer and Nathan Shue, will attend University of North Carolina-Charlotte
• Quinton Phifer (West Rowan), son of Juanita Sifford, will attend University of North Carolina-Charlotte
Funds for the scholarships are raised through the local NAACP’s annual Harvest Banquet. Major corporate sponsors are Food Lion and Holmes Iron and Metal.The Salisbury Post is a corporate donor.
The Harvest Banquet will be held Oct. 19 at Livingstone College’s Event Center.
President of the Salisbury-Rowan Chapter of NAACP is Dr. Bryant Norman, and the scholarship committee is co-chaired by Kay Wright Norman and Corine Parks. Committee members are Velveeta Hairston, Yolanda Woods and Quintin Woodward.
