North Hills juniorNational Merit
Abby Lane, a junior at North Hills Christian School, scored in the top 5 percent of 1.5 million high school students nationwide who entered the National Merit Scholarship Program competition.
Her performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for critical reading, mathematics and writing skills qualified her for the program.
The National Merit Scholarship Program was established in 1955 to recognize outstanding academic achievement among high school seniors.
Students advance in the competition to win Merit Awards, commendations, and scholarships for their undergraduate studies.
Lane will be notified in the fall if she has won an award, a commendation, or if she has advanced to the semi-finals.

Girl’s State
Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post Auxiliary is sponsoring two local girls to attend this year’s Tar Heel Girl’s State at Catawba College, Dana Salmon and Diamond Cauthen.
Salmon, a junior at North Hills Christian School, is the daughter of Pauline Campbell. At North Hills, she has participated in the Praise band, National Honor Society and serves in the student government.
Cauthen, a junior at North Rowan High School, is the daughter of Kiyana Smith. She serves on the Student Council Advisory Board at North. She volunteers at Levine Children’s Hospital.

On the dean’s list
Amanda Kahl, a first-year psychology major and resident of Richfield, was among more than 250 students from Eastern Mennonite University who made the spring semester dean’s list.
To qualify for the dean’s list a student must achieve a semester grade point average of at least 3.75 or above and complete at least 12 semester hours of credit.

Azusa graduate
Kannapolis resident Christopher Speed graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a bachelor of arts degree in theater arts on May 5, and joined nearly 1,400 graduates at the spring commencement ceremonies.
Essay contestwinners
The Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has named Samantha Ann Washko, a sophomore at Salisbury High School, as District IV winner of the Christopher Columbus History Essay Contest for high schoolers.
The contest asked students to write about Christopher Columbus and the influence he had during his own time, in history and today.
Zachary Robinette, a fifth-grader from North Hills Christian School, won the local history essay contest for grades five through eight. That essay prompted students to write about the following topic: Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812.
The DAR promotes American history and good citizenship through the annual essay contest.

Union Collegegraduate
Gina Loflin of Salisbury graduated from Union College during its 133rd commencement exercises.
Loflin earned a bachelor of science degree in human performance. The ceremony was held on May 5.
Salisbury Academy DARE graduates
Salisbury Academy is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s Class of 2012 D.A.R.E. graduates.
Graduates include Isabella Almazan, Annabel Barr, Sarah Clifton, Sam Combs, Brittney Ervin, Zach Johnson, Cheyenne Kober, Bunny Showfety, Ellen Simons and Jeremiah Whitaker.
Led by officer Ann Cooper of the Salisbury Police Department, the fifth-grade class took part in the D.A.R.E. program this quarter, gaining education about the warning signs and harmful effects of substance abuse and violence. Upon completing the program, students wrote an essay sharing how the D.A.R.E. program helped them grow in their knowledge to recognize and resist the pressures that lead to drug and alcohol use.
Sam Combs’s essay was chosen as the most outstanding, and he had the opportunity to share his essay with his classmates at graduation.
In addition to hearing motivating words from Cooper, Mayor Paul Woodson spoke and encouraged the students to make wise choices for their futures.
