Davie High School students will experience what it feels like to diagnose and treat a computerized “patient” in the Davidson County Community College Mobile Medical Simulation Lab during a morning career fair on Friday, Nov. 18, at the high school on Salisbury Road, Mocksville.
Students will enter the DCCC mobile lab to listen to the heart and lung sounds of a computerized mannequin, take his blood pressure and examine him for other disease symptoms. They will also watch as a DCCC faculty member manipulates the patient to make him sweat, have seizures, cry, bleed, blink his eyes and possibly expire if his treatment is incorrect or not timely.
DCCC students develop hands-on, clinical skills in the Mobile Medical Simulation Lab as they prepare for careers to become paramedics or emergency medical technicians, nurses and nursing assistants. With instructors standing by, they practice on a number of mannequins with computers and videorecorders keeping records of various treatment scenarios and solutions. The mobile instruction lab is located inside a 53-foot trailer and features its own power generator.
“We constantly hear feedback from those in the medical field who use our mobile lab that our computerized patients are much more realistic than any other mannequins they have worked on,” said Tony Ramsey, director of emergency medical services for DCCC.
The Davie High School students will treat the newest male member of DCCC’s computerized patient family known as 3G Man. The family also includes another adult male, a female who gives birth to an infant, and male and female adolescent children. All patients have recordable pulses, breathing rates, heartbeats, wounds that bleed, and they respond to medications and medical procedures.
In addition to the mobile lab, a number of other displays and information tables will be staffed by DCCC faculty and staff during the career fair that takes place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A student services team will provide information and answer questions regarding career counseling, DCCC tuition, financial aid, scholarships, admissions, student clubs and athletics.
