Area sports briefs: Labor Day golf

The Country Club of Salisbury will host the annual Labor Day Memorial Four Ball Tournament, with qualifying rounds taking place on Friday, Aug. 26 through Sunday, Aug. 28.
In addition to regular and senior divisions, there will be a women’s division this year.
Match play rounds will take place on Labor Day Weekend.
Entry fee for the tournament is $50 for members and $75 for non-members.

• The Final Tournament of the Junior Mac Summer Series had a legion of top finishers on Thursday. They included:
9-under — Ben Childress (45) and Gavin Sprinkle (46)
10-13 — Nick Lyerly (34), Logan Shuping (37), Michael Childress (38), Brennan Lambert (42) and Bryson Sprinkle (44).
14-17 — Winner Jacob Durham (51), Kirk Kovach (51), Liam Pendergrass (51).
Longest drive — Ben Childress (9-under), Shuping (10-13) and Pendergrass (14-17).
• Debby Little of Salisbury recorded a hole-in-one recently at Lexington Golf Course.
She used a 9-wood to record the ace on the 117-yard 16th hole. It was her second hole-in-one, the other coming at Warrior Golf Club.
Witnessing the feat were Charles Sergeant and Shandall Curry.
In the Dogwood State Junior Championship, local golfers did well.
Alex Nianouris shot 74-74-72 — 218 to tie for fifth place in the boys competition.
Troy Beaver shot 75-75-73 — 223 to tie for 16th.
Eric Edwards shot 74-74-79 — 227 to tied for 26th. Edwards was fourth in the ages 14-15 division.
Roy Dixon III shot 73-78-77 — 228 to tie for 31st.
In the EGolf Professional Tour’s HGM Hotels Classic held in Conover, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 71-72 — 143 but missed the cut.
American Legion
Play begins in the American Legion World Series today in Shelby, with Eden Prairie, Minn., taking on Midland, Mich., at 10 a.m.
Minor leagues
Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) doubled and scored in Rome’s 4-2 South Atlantic League win against Asheville on Thursday.
Kannapolis beat Hickory 3-0 in SAL action on Thursday, riding five shutout innings by Jon Bachanov and a homer by Dan Black.
Kannapolis leads the Northern Division by 11/2 games.
Former Charlotte 49ers star Rob Lyerly went 3-for-5 for the Trenton Thunder, the New York Yankees’ Double A team, on Thursday. Both his parents are Rowan natives.
Wood bat leagues
Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) had a rare bad outing, allowing eight earned runs in 32/3 innings as Gastonia beat Forest City 15-2 to knock out the Owls out of the Coastal Plain League playoffs.

Spencer Little League/Franklin Ellis Pee Wee League fall baseball registration will be held today from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. until noon at 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer. Or register online at www.eteamz.com/spencerlittleleague1.

South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through Aug. 27 for its fall flag football program for rising K-5th grade boys.
Practice starts week of Sept. 12 and games begin week of Sept. 26.
Fees are $36 for members and $60 potential members.
