Area sports briefs updated: Meek makes ace

Bill Meek made a hole-in-one on the No. 3 hole at Warrior Golf Club on Saturday.
Meek used a 7-iron on the 162-yard hole to record his first career ace.
Witnesses were Mike Suter, Chad Steen and Richard Schrader.
n Prep basketballThe Sam Moir Christmas Classic, sponsored by Cheerwine and F&M Bank, begins today at Catawba’s Goodman Gym.

n Lake Norman is the No. 1 seed for the boys bracket of the Statesville Record & Landmark Holiday Classic.
Statesville and West Iredell’s boys will meet in the No. 4 vs. No. 5 game in today’s first round. Lake Norman takes on the winner on Tuesday.
North Iredell’s boys are seeded No. 6 and play Forbush today.
All games are at South Iredell.
n The Pfeiffer Challenge at Merner Gym starts Tuesday with South Stanly-North Stanly and Albemarle-West Stanly doubleheaders.
Action starts at 4 p.m.
n Action resumes today for Davidson schools in the NewBridge Bank Classic at Ledford High.
n West Rowan baseballWest Rowan coach David Wright has released the school’s 2010 baseball schedule.
The varsity Falcons open on March 1 with a home game against Mount Pleasant.
West will play another strong non-league schedule and is taking on 4A Davie, Mount Tabor and North Davidson. West plays perennial power Rocky Mount in the Impact Invite on March 6 and will make a Saturday trip to Asheville T.C. Roberson.
West’s NPC opener is against South Rowan on March 9.
In late March, West plays Forsyth Country Day and St. Stephens in non-league games.
On April 2-3, West will play at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium against A.L. Brown and Northwest Cabarrus.
Another highlight is the return of the NPC tournament.
There’s room on the schedule now that the league has been reduced from 10 to seven teams.
n All-American cheerleadersNorth Rowan junior Ashtyn Kepley and Cavalier seniors Maria Williams and Sheneqa Suber are All-American cheerleaders and will cheer at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on New Year’s Day.
n Hitting lessons
Pro baseball player Daniel Wagner is offering personalized hitting instruction at the indoor cage at his home at 225 Wagner Acres Trail, Kannapolis.

Lessons are available on a first-come, first-serve basis through Jan. 9. Wagner, a former South Rowan and Belmont standout was a draft pick of the Chicago White Sox last summer and finished the season with the Kannapolis Intimidators.
