Area sports briefs: Pfeiffer wins big

Chris Woods scored a career-high 34 points for Pfeiffer and added 10 rebounds as the Falcons beat USC Aiken 97-78 at Goodman Gym on Saturday.
The teams were tied at halftime.
Kierre Jordan sank a pair of free throws with 13:35 remaining and Pfeiffer held the lead the rest of the way.
Jeff Pettiway added 15 points for the Falcons, including a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe. Jordan scored 10 points. James Crowder had 10 rebounds and six assists.
Pfeiffer shot 47 percent in the second half, 42 percent for the game.
Mike Technow, a transfer from American, led USC Aiken with 16 points.
Woods had 18 points in the second half and will lead Pfeiffer against Catawba today at 3 p.m. at Goodman.
nDC girls beat Carson
Davie County’s girls opened with a 61-36 win against Carson on Saturday at the Davie gym.
Davie broke open a tight game in the second quarter.
The War Eagles were balanced with five players scoring seven or more points. Janna Dixon led the way with 10.
Carson was led by freshman Tyesha Phillips’ 10 points. Demya Heggins had eight, and Allison Blackwell, another freshman, scored seven.
Carson is at home against A.L. Brown on Monday, while Davie goes to West Iredell.

n Livingstone women
Livingstone women’s basketball team failed to hold a 15-point lead in the second half and lost to Elizabeth City State 62-58 on Saturday night at Trent Gym.
Livingstone was up by 15 with 13:44 remaining, but Elizabeth City got 44 points from its bench and beat the Blue Bears 47-30 on the glass.
Livingstone (2-1, 0-1 CIAA) was again led by senior guard Kayler McBride. She scored 19 points.
Brittany Wright had seven rebounds.
Livingstone is home again on Monday against St. Paul’s.
nMen’s basketball
Michael Gore (South Rowan) scored two points for Coker in 12 minutes of action in a 74-65 win a UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
nCollege volleyball
Wingate’s volleyball team swept Carson-Newman on Saturday night to advance to the Southeast Regional final against Flagler on Sunday.
nSacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys defeated St. John’s of Winston-Salem 52-35.
Eric Edwards tossed in a career-high 26 points for the Dolphins (6-1) and added eight rebounds, five assists and six steals. Banks Fisher had 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Bobby Cardelle, Chili Chilton and Yonathan Sorto paced the defense.
– Sacred Heart’s varsity girls beat St. John’s 43-7 for their first win of the season. Sacred Heart was led by Erin Ansbro with 25 points.
Anna Tonseth had 13 points and Ansbro 12 in a 33-31 loss to Community School of Davidson.
n In a jayvee boys game, Sacred Heart fell 22-18 to St. John’s despite 10 points by Joseph Harrison.
n Sacred Heart hosts the Rowan-Cabarrus Home School Stallions on Monday at the Boyd Dolphin Tank.
n The annual Jack Campbell Memorial Hoops Classic featuring the Blue-Gold Game and the Alumni Game, is set for Saturday, Nov. 28, at Sacred Heart.
Proceeds go to the Jack Campbell Scholarship Fund. The Campbell Scholarship is awarded each year to a Salisbury High senior. Campbell died of cancer in 2005. The 2004 graduate played soccer, baseball and basketball for the Hornets.

nPhenoms basketball
The Phenoms basketball program is forming developmental and travel teams for boys and girls grades 3-11.
Phenoms provide skill development training Sundays from 3-5 p.m.
Tutoring and SAT/ACT prep sessions will begin in January.
