Staff report
North Rowan coach Kelly Everhart noticed during warmups that West Davidson was missing one of its post players, and the Cavaliers took advantage of a mismatch inside in a 60-35 victory Friday night in Tyro.
Winslow Cherry scored 22 points, Marquise Weddington added 10, and the Cavs improved to 2-0 in the CCC despite an overall record of 3-8.
“I felt like we had a big advantage inside, so we immediately tried to go on the attack inside,” Everhart said. “Winslow had an outstanding first half shooting the ball.
“At halftime we had already established control inside.”
In fact, at halftime Cherry had outscored the Green Dragons (4-6, 0-1 CCC) by himself, 16-14.
The Cavaliers now find themselves tied for the conference lead. They were 1-8 in 2007 but are 2-0 in 2008.
“I’m thrilled to death with our start here in ’08,” Everhart said. “This was a good week for us, and all along I have been telling the kids you gotta keep battling, gotta keep fighting and good things are gonna happen. Playing a tough nonconference schedule can do one of two things to you. It can make you better, or it can beat you down and you can just give up because you don’t now how to win.
“I hope we have turned that corner and we are figuring out how to win a little bit.”
