Two events are on tap for Saturday, May 31. Cyclists can enjoy non-competitive riding while those who want to race against themselves and others have a 5K available as well.

The Second Annual Great Berry Ride provides an opportunity to ride one of several different distances, all with rest stops and plenty of support along the way. The Great Berry Ride will originate at Patterson Farm Market on Caldwell Road and riders can choose from distances of 20, 40 or 60 miles. All rides start at 8:30 a.m.

All participants will get a Dri-fit, brightly colored cycling shirt and lunch will be provided following their ride by Pinocchio’s of Spencer. Riders will follow mapped routes with signs and directional arrows marking turns.

Should the riders experience mechanical or any other issues, support will be available. The courses will include western Rowan County and Iredell County roads. Helmets are required and the Berry Ride will go on, rain or shine. Special team pricing is available.

Activities for families awaiting riders will include the farm playground, barnyard and the Altrusa Reading Festival.

The Great Berry Ride benefits the Rowan County United Way and Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care. More information can be obtained by calling 704-636-4005.

The Second Annual East Rowan Band Parents 5K will be held at 9 a.m. at the East Rowan High School track. The 5K course will use part of the school campus as well as quiet neighborhood streets. Runners and walkers will compete in ten age groups for both males and females. A half-mile fun run for kids, 9 and under, will be held following the 5K.

T-shirts will go to pre-registered runners and walkers on race day. Refreshments will be provided following both events. Walkers are encouraged to participate.

More information can be obtained by calling Kim Howard at 704-279-3339.

Online registration for both events continues all week at www.sportoften.com and printable registration brochures are available at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org
