The Rowan County Health Department announced its participation in National Public Health Week, a country-wide initiative aimed at promoting public health awareness and education.

Throughout the week of April 1, the health department will work with various community partners to host events designed to engage the community and address important public health issues.

In 2021 through the Community Health Needs Assessment process, Rowan County citizens identified mental health, substance use and healthy lifestyles as priority health issues. This year’s Public Health Week plans were organized to align with those health areas.

One of the key events during National Public Health Week is the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training. That training session will take place on April 1 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Rowan County Library Headquarters, Stanback Room, located at 201 W Fisher Street in Salisbury.

QPR training equips individuals with the skills to recognize and respond to the warning signs of suicide, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in mental health awareness and suicide prevention. In addition to the QPR Suicide Prevention Training, the health department will host a variety of other events aimed at promoting public health and well-being:

  • Spring into the Kitchen: A cooking demonstration focusing on healthy eating habits will be held on April 2nd from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Auditorium, 2727 Old Concord Road A in Salisbury. • Readers for Change: Mental Health: Join local organizations for discussions about mental health in Rowan County on April 3 at 6 p.m. at South Main Book Company, 110 S. Main St., Salisbury.
  • Public Health Trivia: Test your knowledge of public health topics at New Sarum Brewery on April 4 at 7 p.m., located at 109 N. Lee St., Salisbury.
  • Pop-up Mobile Narcan: The Rowan County HOPE team will provide free Narcan, fentanyl testing strips, and educational materials on April 5 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at Rowan Treatment Associates, 1504 Jake Alexander Blvd., Salisbury.
The events offer opportunities for community members to engage with public health professionals, learn new skills and access important resources. The Rowan County Health Department encourages everyone to participate in National Public Health Week and take proactive steps towards improving the health and well-being of our community.
