College football roundup …
With Virginia redshirt freshman K.P. Parks (West Rowan) sitting out with an injured ankle and Western Carolina true freshman Shaun Warren (Carson) limited by Furmanís defense, it was a quiet Saturday for local college players.
Warren was held to 14 yards in five carries, although he still ranks sixth in Southern Conference rushing with 303 yards.
Parks, who has 282 rushing yards and six TDs, had his ankle in a boot on Tuesday and Wednesday and didnít practice all week.
The Cavaliers opted to rest him Saturday (Virginia beat Idaho in overtime). The Cavaliers are idle this coming weekend, so thereís a good chance Parks will be healed for a battle with Georgia Tech on Oct. 15.
n The leading Rowan rusher in the college ranks Saturday was actually Army slotback Jon Crucitti (West), who carried five times for 15 yards. Crucitti also ran back a kickoff 19 yards.
Look for some polite trash talk when Army plays Navy on Dec. 10. Brantley Horton, Crucittiís teammate at West, is a sophomore receiver on the Navy squad.
nIke Whitaker (Salisbury) has enjoyed some productive games for Lenoir-Rhyne but was held to 5 yards in four carries in a loss to North Greenville.
n Defensive players also werenít noisy Saturday with the exception of UNC Pembrokeís Cadarreus Mason (see David Shawís story).
n Appalachian Stateís Gordy Witte Jr. (Salisbury) made one tackle in a loss to Wofford. Chris Smith (West) had a tackle in Arkansasí comeback win against Texas A&M. Tristan Dorty (West) started at defensive end and was credited with two tackles in Wake Forestís win against Boston College.
n True freshman linebacker Jared Barber (Davie) is on the field for West Virginia. He had a tackle for loss in Saturdayís romp against Bowling Green.
Barber also was WVUís special teams player of the week vs. Maryland.
Barber turned down Wake Forest and N.C. State to be a Mountaineer.
n L-R LB Zach Long (Davie) had three tackles in the loss to North Greenville.
n West Liberty true freshman Eric Cowan (West) made two kickoff returns for 46 yards and had one tackle as a starting corner in a loss to Glenville State.
n Guard Austin Lowe (West) was a Wingate captain on Saturday. Lowe and center Joseph So (Salisbury) started on the offensive line for the Bulldogs in a win against Carson-Newman.
n Catawba got help from a trio of true freshmen in Saturdayís big win against UNC Pembroke. Mark McDaniel (South Rowan) and Trey Mashore (West) had solid kickoff returns. Fullback Jacorian Brown rushed three times for 14 yards and made a tackle on a kickoff.
True freshman QB B.J. Sherrill (West) is No. 2 on Catawbaís depth chart, but the plan is for him to redshirt this season if starter Jacob Charest stays healthy.
nZack Grkman (Carson) started at cornerback for Averett and contributed four tackles in a loss to N.C. Wesleyan. Anthony Bowles (South) caught a 10-yard pass for Averett.
n Virginia Unionís Jay Bostick (NW Cabarrus) racked up a safety in a win against Chowan on Saturday.
n Emory & Henryís Matt Turchin (West) kicked a 35-yard field goal in a win against Randolph-Macon.
