Area sports briefs: Salisbury volleyball wins

Salisbury’s volleyball team defeated East Davidson 3-2 in Thomasville on Tuesday for another CCC victory.
Brielle Blaire had a season-high 17 kills.
Olivia Smith served for 37 points, including six aces. Mary Seifert contributed 13 assists, while Smith had 14. Katie Canipe was a standout on defense with seven digs.
Salisbury improved to 3-2 in the CCC. The Hornets play at West Davidson on Thursday.
Prep tennis
Kelly Dulkoski, Hannah Shinn, Haylee Hepler, Harley Graham, Sara Lentz and Laura Isenhour won singles matches as Carson beat Statesville 9-0 in NPC play on Tuesday.
Shinn has lost only one match this year.
Carson (9-3) is second in the NPC and has lost only to NPC leader East Rowan and West Davidson. See Scoreboard.
Prep soccer
Davie tied Mount Tabor 2-2 in CPC boys soccer on Monday, a notable achievement in that the War Eagles were 0-37 lifetime against the Spartans (6-4-2) coming into the match.
Bryce Bartelt and Alexis Hernandez scored for the War Eagles, who are still unbeaten at 8-0-5 after their league opener.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s women’s golf team placed fourth out of 12 teams at the Tusculum Fall Classic. Catawba shot 327-320 — 647. Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) led the Indians with 81-75 — 156. She finished 11th.
Catawba’s men’s golf team placed fifth out of 12 teams at the Tusculum Fall Classic. Brad Cline shot 70-72-142 and Mike Opsitnick shot 73-69 — 142. They tied for fifth.
Catawba’s tennis teams split at home against Pfeiffer on Tuesday, with the men sweeping doubles and rolling 7-2.
The Catawba women lost 6-3.
Middle school football
China Grove’s eighth-graders beat Erwin 24-6 in a makeup game played on Monday.Michael Morrison had a 12-yard TD run for the Red Devils. Dylan Livengood scored on a 2-yard run. Austin Lear scored on a 6-yard run.
Brennan Lambert kicked two PATs, worth two points each. He also passed to Zach Tatarka for another two-point conversion.
Standouts on defense for the Red Devils were Morrison, Jacob McCurry, Peyton Penninger and Cody Kepley.
Middle school softball
Erwin’s softball team beat Corriher-Lipe 10-0. Taylor Merritt pitched a no-hitter, striking out six and walking three.
Avery Wright had two hits for the Eagles (7-1), while Micah Furr, Ashlyn Mills and Madison Hunter contributed one each.
Middle school soccer
Sacred Heart put on another showcase soccer display in a 5-0 win over Concordia.
Reilly Gokey scored the first goal after nice passes by Ceci Cardelle and Elena Turnbull.
Gokey scored from the edge of the box for a 2-0 lead. Julia Honeycutt scored from 30 yards to make it 3-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Melvin Bonilla finished on a nice cross by Cardelle, and Rigo Salazar scored his first goal of the season.
Salisbury Academy rolled 6-1 against Statesville Christian on Tuesday.
Andreas Kalogeromitros crossed to Marcus Corry for a strong shot to the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Matt Washko sent a perfect through ball to Sam Uliana, who one- touched for the Jaguars’ second goal.
Kalogeromitros crossed to Washko to make it 3-1. Washko’s corner was headed in by Robbie Bergstone for 4-1, and Washko crossed to Kalogeromitros, who struck a full volley from 25 yards for a 5-1 halftime lead.
Washko crossed from the endline to Kalogeromitros, who slid in and touched it home for the Jaguars’ second-half goal.
SA plays at Sacred Heart today.
Middle school tennis
Erwin defeated Corriher-Lipe 9-0 on Monday. Winners in singles for the Eagles were Laura Agner, Ilia Wang, Lana Jackson, Lydia Hartung, Caroline Plyler and Kelby Porter.
Winners in doubles were Jennifer Earnhardt-Caroline Dean, Celsea Reeder-Haley Buffett, and Katie Barnes-Shannon Mahaffey.
Knox edged Mooresville 5-4 on Monday.
Singles winners for the Trojans were Kathryn Rusher, Shelby Holden and Nellie Brown. Doubles winners were Rusher-Brown and Chloe McGee-Lainey Slate.
Southeast beat Corriher-Lipe 9-0.
Singles winners for the Patriots were Mackenzie Menius, Rachel Gunsch, Maggie Hollar, Brienne Leach, Samantha Liddle and Mackenzie Koontz.
Doubles victories came from Menius-Gunsch, Hollar-Peoples and Liddle-Koontz.
Youth football
All four Salisbury 49ers teams traveled to take on the Charlotte Cowboys.
Salisbury’s 7-8 age group won 28-0. The 9-10 age group won 22-0. The 11-12 age group won 24-0. The 5-6 age group lost in the final minute 12-6. All four teams are on the verge of qualifying for the Southland Conference playoffs.
Local golf
Sixty GARS members played at Corbin Hills on Monday. Low ‘A’ flight player was Butch Adams with a net of 58.68. Low ‘B’ flight player was Buddy Barger with a net of 66.92. Low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 60.95 was Jim Harris. Low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 65.77 was John Cress.
