SALISBURY — A Salisbury man was charged with felony larceny early this morning after police say he removed anti-theft devices on three cameras and stole them from Walmart while running from an officer.
Salisbury Police Officer Scott Mumford stopped by Walmart around 3:30 a.m. today to do a routine walk-through while on patrol. As he entered the store, Larry Derricio White, 35, of 401 Grace St. 731 in Salisbury, was on his way out.
According to the police report, White was startled when he saw the officer and hurried away. A loss prevention employee of Walmart signaled for Mumford to stop White.
The officer reported that when he tried to stop him, White said he had no right and cursed at him before shoving the officer and running out the door.
White reportedly jumped the guardrail and ran down Arlington Street, dropping three small cameras along the way. Mumford said he determined the cameras — worth a total of $70 — had been taken from Walmart.
The larceny charge would have been a misdemeanor, but it automatically became a felony because the anti-theft devices were removed.
White was charged with felony larceny, assault on a public official and resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 bond and remained there late this morning.
