The Junior American Legion playoffs start tonight.
Top seed Rowan County and No. 2 seed Carson are the teams representing the Southern Division of Area III.
Rowan hosts Eastern Randolph tonight at Staton Field in Game 1 of a best-of-three series.
Carson travels to Southeast Guilford for Game 1 of a best-of-three series.
On Sunday, Rowan will be on the road, while Carson will play at home.
Games are at 7 p.m.
Eastern Randolph won 8-6 in 12 innings against Randolph County on Friday to take a best-of-five series 3-2.
Eastern Randolph Post 81’s Nate Poirer singled in two runs with two outs in the 12th at McCrary Park.
Eastern Randolph will travel to meet Winston-Salem in the second round beginning Sunday night.
Randolph County Post 45 is out of the state championship hunt, but the team will r play in the Southeast Regional as the host team from August 7-11.
• Southern Rowan starts a second-round series against Mooresville Post 66 at Lake Norman High on Sunday.
• Mocksville will play at Rowan County or will host Concord in a second-round series starting on Sunday.
The Hagerstown Suns (10-6, 54-32) won 9-0 over the Kannapolis Intimidators (11-5, 40-43) on Friday.
L.A. Dodgers prospect Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit his 15th homer of the season on Thursday.
Seagers is batting .350 with 58 RBIs.
• Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) won his first game of the season in the New York-Penn League on Thursday. Lomascolo pitched two innings and allowed one run.
• Chris Dula (Catawba) pitched his third straight scoreless relief outing on Thursday.
• Whit Merrifield (Davie) is still hitting. He’s batting 384 in Triple-A and drove in runs Thursday and Friday.

East Rowan’s 8U all-stars won the Area 3 WNC Cal Ripken tournament Tuesday night with a 13-9 victory over Stewards of the Game in Churchland.
ER began the tournament with a 16-8 win over Davidson County Friday night. They demolished North Stokes 44-2 in 2 innings Saturday and crushed Equipment Sports 29-5 Sunday afternoon. They start play in the WNC Cal Ripken State tournament July 12 at 11 a.m. in Fletcher.
Team members are Nathan Hayworth, Jaden Sprinkle, Morgan Padgett, Logan Dyer, McCall Henderson, Drew Young, Joseph Burleyson, Gannon Kepley, Aiden Michael, Calab Honeycutt, Stewart Callahan-Fletcher, and Braden Shive. They are coached by Chuck Hayworth. His assistants are Kelly Sparger and Will Michael.
• East Rowan’s 9U all-stars won the Area 3 WNC Cal Ripken championship with a 6-5 win over Surry North Wednesday night in Statesville.
ER defeated Yadkin County 14-4, Surry South 12-6, and Surry North 17-1 to reach the championship. East moves on to the WNC Cal Ripken State tournament in Lexington next week.
Team members are Cobb Hightower, Blake Hill, Cameron Padgett, Chance Mako, Jordan King, Colby Jackson, Jaxon Trexler, Dylan Valley, Kamden Ridgell, Aaron Coe, and Whitt Hoesman. They are coached by Brian Hightower. His assistants are Chris Mako, Shane Valley and Roger Hoesman.
• East Rowan’s 12U all-stars qualified for the WNC Cal Ripken State tournament in Huntersville by battling back through the losers bracket of the Area 2 WNC Cal Ripken tournament in Statesville for a third-place finish. ER lost its opener to Maiden 13-4, but then reeled off three straight wins to reach the state tournament.
East defeated Alexander County 5-4, Mountain View 23-2, and China Grove 16-8 before losing to Balls Creek 17-7 for the third-place finish.
Their state tournament begins July 11 at 6 p.m. Team members are Corbin Durham, Mason Leonard, Mason Heard, Julian Malnar, Jake Holshouser, Jacob Bogacz, Devon Shaver, Spencer Chandler, Jeremy Clevenger, Colton Trexler, and Mark Spry. They are coached by James Durham. He’s assisted by Ryan Heard and Kevin Holshouser.
ER’s 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, and 12U teams qualified for their respective WNC Cal Ripken State tournaments. ER had three area champions, one runner-up, and one third place team. ER is the only league in WNC Cal Ripken baseball to have every all-star team they fielded reach the state tournament.
Spencer’s Dominic DeSanto will return to the ring with a fight on Saturday, July 12, in Charlotte at Club Hush at 3500 Independence Blvd.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. First bell is at 6 p.m.
DeSanto has had some injuries that have kept him out of action the past 18 months.
