CHAPEL HILL ó North Carolina tailback Ryan Houston will need surgery after fracturing his shoulder blade.
The senior was hurt during the Tar Heelsí annual spring game last weekend. The school says it will update Houstonís status after Thursdayís surgery.
Houston didnít play last season. He missed the first five games amid the NCAA investigation into agent-related benefits and possible academic misconduct before he was cleared to return, but he decided to redshirt.
Houston had been the finisher at the goal line for the Tar Heels, rushing for 17 touchdowns in 2008 and 2009.
N.C. STATE
RALEIGH ó North Carolina State running back Mustafa Greene will undergo surgery for a foot injury suffered in a scrimmage.
Greene led the Wolfpack in rushing as a freshman in 2010 with 597 yards and four touchdowns. He was injured last Saturday.
Team spokeswoman Annabelle Myers said Greene is expected to recover in time for the state of preseason practice.
The Wolfpack holds its annual spring game on Saturday.
INGRAM HIGHWAY
LANSING, Mich. ó The Michigan Senate has approved naming a stretch of state highway for former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.
The measure passed the Senate unanimously Wednesday and next goes to the Michigan House.
Democratic Sen. John Gleason of Flushing sponsored the bill to honor Ingram, who went to high school in Michigan and played collegiately at Alabama.
SMITH DIES
WEST POINT, N.Y. ó Former Army head coach Homer Smith, regarded as one of keenest offensive minds in the annals of college football, has died. He was 79.
Smith was an assistant at several schools in his 39-year career, never staying long enough at any one place to put down roots. He coached at Stanford, Air Force, Alabama, Arizona, the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, and served three stints as offensive coordinator at UCLA.
While with the Bruins, Smith developed seven future NFL quarterbacks, including Tommy Maddox, Jay Schroeder, and current UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel. Smith also was head coach at Davidson and Pacific.
