The seventh annual J.C. Price Hall of Fame banquet was held recently at Cornerstone Church.
Rufus Little and Quentin Woodward presides, and Hall of Fame committee chairman John Mackey gave the purpose of the occasion.
Football and basketball player Terry Lawz (Class of 1951) and Charlie Bush (1953) were inducted posthumously.
Others inducted were Salisbury’s Kenneth Carroll (1956), Salisbury’s Doris B. Goodman (1966), New England’s Lazel A. Nash (1948), Salisbury’s Sadie Hawkins Rice (1961) and Durham’s Connia Henry Watson Jr. (1953).
The motto of the Price Hall of Fame Committee is: “Keeping history and memories alive.”
American Legion
First-round pairings for the American Legion playoffs which start on Monday should be 1. Mocksville vs. 8. Concord; 2. Kannapolis vs. 7. Statesville; 3. Mooresville Moors vs. 6. Stanly, and 4. Mooresville Legends vs. 5. Rowan County.
Rowan will be at the Mooresville Legends to open the best-of-five series. Mocksville and Kannapolis will also open at home.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell behind 11-0 early against Hickory and lost 13-9 on Thursday. Leighton Pangilinan and Joe De Pinto had three hits each for the Intimidators.
PAL football
The Police Athletic football team is holding summer practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 across from the House of Prayer on Old Concord Rd.

Parks and Rec softball
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting teams for its adult coed softball league.
Cost is $400 per team, plus a $25 USSSA sanction fee.
Coaches meeting is July 9 at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym. The season begins July 22.

Youth baseball
East Rowan’s 7U baseball all-stars will play in the WNC Cal Ripken State Tournament at Arcadia Park today.
East will play at 1 p.m., with temperatures projected to top 100 degrees.
Local golf
Local golfers from Salisbury played in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association tournament held at Badin Inn Golf Resort on Thursday.
Michael Childress finished second in the 12-13 age group with a 74.
Nick Lyerly shot 80 to finish fourth.
The winner shot 72.
Ben Childress, 8, played in the 11-under division. He finished second with a 47 for nine holes. The winner shot 43.
College football
Wingate wide receiver Chris Bowden is a pre-season first team All-American, as selected by Lindy’s Magazine and the Beyond Sports Network.
As a junior, Bowden recorded 1,064 yards receiving on 76 receptions.
College basketball
Pfeiffer’s Tony Smith was named to the NAIA 75th anniversary all-star team, which includes 60 players and 15 coaches.
Smith still holds 26 Pfeiffer records, five of which he set in a 50-point outing against Belmont Abbey in 1992. He scored 3,350 career points.
“Tony Pfeiffer basketball and is the most complete player I have ever coached,” Bobby Lutz said. “His talent was matched by his competitive spirit and will to win. No one was better than Tony with the game on the line.”
Among the other notable players on the team are Guilford’s Lloyd Free and M.L. Carr, Murray State’s Joe Fulks, Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Terry Porter, Winston-Salem State’s Earl Monroe, Grambling’s Willis Reed, SE Oklahoma State’s Dennis Rodman and Illinois Wesleyan’s Jack Sikma.
College baseball
For the first time joining Division I, Appalachian State (41-18) finished its season ranked in one of college baseball’s major national polls. The Mountaineers are No. 29 in the final Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll.
First baseman Trey Holmes (East Rowan) and outfielder Preston Troutman (East) were two of the Mountaineers named to the all-regional team for ASU’s play in the Charlottesville Regional.
