Area Sports Briefs: Aces at Rowan golf courses

Local golf
Parker Cristman made a hole-in-one at The Revival Golf Course at the Crescent.
He used a hybrid 5-iron on the No. 8 hole from the gold tees (120 yards). The shot was witnessed by Richard Terrell.

Cooter Loflin, of Rockwell, made a hole-in-one at McCanless,
Loflin, 68, has been playing at McCanless for 58 years. This was his first career ace.
He accomplished the feat on the 115-yard No. 3 hole with a pitching wedge.
Playing with Loflin were Billy Cruse, Mark Correll, and Big Koot.

The 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington begins on Thursday.
The field includes local golfers Charlie Barr and Michael Childress.

 

College football

Catawba head coach Curtis Walker announced Marco Butler has rejoined the football staff and will serve as the defensive coordinator.

In addition to his coordinating duties, Butler will coach the cornerbacks.

Butler was with Catawba in 2017, when he also coached the cornerbacks. That season, the Catawba Indians (9-2) posted a dozen interceptions and 44 pass breakups. The secondary allowed just six touchdown passes and limited teams to a 47-percent completion rate.

Over the past two seasons, Butler coached at Gardner-Webb University. In 2018, he coached outside linebackers and cornerbacks in 2019 as well as special teams.

Butler has nearly 20 years of coaching experience, including Division I stops at Hampton (2014) and Norfolk State (2005-2013). Butler also has college coaching experience at Division II Fayetteville State. He also served as head track and field coach at Fayetteville State in 2004-2005.

Butler played receiver and defensive back at Western Carolina. He graduated in 2000 with a degree in sports management and a minor in marketing.

Butler and his wife, Shauna, have two children, a daughter, Eva, and a son, Marco.

 

High school football

West Rowan announced several staff additions, including new defensive coordinator/cornerbacks coach Kenronté Walker.

The 29-year-old Fayetteville native played safety at Missouri and was in the Cleveland Browns’ camp in 2013 as an undrafted free agent.

Walker made 10 tackles in a game against Texas Tech in 2011.

 

High school basketball

North Rowan’s Brandon White (Class of 2022) received an offer from Texas A&M basketball.

Salisbury’s Kyla Bryant (Class of 2023) received an offer from Bethune-Cookman women’s basketball.

 

NCHSAA

The NCHSAA held a press conference on Wednesday.

There were no definitive announcements. The NCHSAA said it’s still too early to say what will happen with fall sports. A number of plans are being discussed.

Rowan-Salisbury schools resumed limited athletic activities on July 6. Davie also has started limited activities. The majority of school systems in the state, including Cabarrus and Kannapolis, don’t plan to start for several weeks.

NC3 Junior baseball

West Rowan got 14 hits and pounded Mocksville Red 12-1 at Mando Field on Wednesday.

Matthew Connolly, Lucas Graham and Brice Knox had two hits each.

Zander Burton got the win. Zach McNeely finished on the mound.

East Rowan rolled 10-0 against Kannapolis on Wednesday.

 

International baseball

Former Catawba slugger Jerry Sands hit his 2nd homer of the season on Sunday in Hanshin’s 8-3 win at Hiroshima.

South Rowan’s Nathan Chrismon had two hits and scored a run for the South Charlotte Panthers 2022 in a 3-2 win against Team Georgia Gold on Wednesday. East Rowan’s Cameron Padgett pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run.

Chrismon was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh to force home the winning run in a 2-1 win against Titans Blue on Wednesday.

Wood bat baseball

In Coastal Plain League action on Tuesday, Catawba’s Luke Spiva had two doubles in High Point-Thomasville’s 10-4 win against Bull City on Tuesday.
Catawba’s Tyrese Hearst pitched a scoreless inning.
