MARS HILL —  Catawba’s women’s basketball team beat South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill on Saturday, 94-57, and stayed unbeaten.

Anna Gardner and Emily Phillips made four 3-pointers apiece in the onslaught. Catawba (8-0, 4-0) made 13 from long range.

Lyrik Thorne had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Indians.

Catawba forced 31 turnovers and broke the game  open in the second quarter.

Gardner’s younger sister, Mallory, plays for Mars Hill and scored six points.

Catawba men win

MARS HILL —  Catawba’s men’s basketball team won 94-76 at Mars Hill on Saturday, handing the Lions their first South Atlantic Conference setback of the season.

Six Indians scored in double figures, with Larry McLeod (15 points), Devin Cooper (15), Marcell Haskett (14), Daquan Lilly (13),    Malik Constantine (12) and Terrence Whitfield (12) leading the way.

Lilly also had 15 rebounds.  McLeod and Whitfield had eight each.

McLeod was returning from a concussion.

Catawba had an 18-8 edge in offensive boards and was able to pull away in the second half.

Catawba (7-2, 3-1) had solid offense, shooting 48 percent from the field, but really stood out defensively, holding the Lions (5-5, 3-1) to 33 percent from the field and 6-for-24 on 3-pointers.

Austin Gilyard scored 20 for the Lions.

The Salisbury Hornets boys and girls wrestling teams   competed in the  Al Kessie Invitational at Olympic High in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday.

Mid. school hoops

North Rowan’s girls won against Southeast in the conference tournament, 57-3, on Saturday.

Demya Phifer scored 19.  Bailee Goodlett, Bloom Goodlett and Dasia Elder scored eight each. Brittany Ellis had six.

HS girls basketball

SALISBURY — Bishop McGuinness beat North Rowan, 53-40,  in girls basketball on Saturday at Catawba.

McGuinness (8-0) jumped out to a 14-3 lead after a quarter and North (5-2) couldn’t fight all the way back.

Tate Chappell scored 13 for the Villains.

Hannah Wilkerson led North with 15 points and six rebounds.

Natavia Taborn had 10 points. Makiya McDaniel scored five.

FORT MILL, S.C. — A.L. Brown defeated Nation Ford 72-52 on Saturday.

Kheni Briggs led the unbeaten Wonders (6-0) with 19 points.

Amari Grier scored 14, DQ Foggie had 13, and Nick Colson scored 12.

SALISBURY — North Rowan beat Bishop McGuinness 58-53 on Saturday at Catawba.

Denerio Robinson scored 13 for North. Zay Davis had 12. Brandon White scored 11 of his 12 in the fourth quarter and had 16 rebounds.

Brandon Jefferson had four assists for the Cavaliers (4-1), who have won their last four.

Noah Allred made five 3-pointers and scored 22 for the Villains (7-3).

Rylee Anderson scored five touchdowns to lead Robbinsville (15-0)  to a 45-14 win against Northampton in the 1A championship game in Durham.

In the 2A championship game in Winston-Salem, Reidsville (15-1) shut out Northeastern (Elizabeth City), 14-0, with a stout defensive performance.

In the 4A championship game in Chapel Hill, East Forsyth (13-2) came from behind twice and beat  Cardinal Gibbons, 24-21.

  In the 4AA championship game in Chapel Hill, Vance (13-2) used suffocating defense to shut down Leesville Road for a 24-3 victory and the school’s first state title.

In the 1AA championship game in Durham, East Surry surprised Tarboro, 56-28.

East Surry quarterback Jefferson Boaz set state championship game records for passing yards (478) and passing touchdowns (7). He also ran for a touchdown.

In the 3A championship game in Raleigh, Charlotte Catholic (12-3) pulled away in the second half and handed Southern Nash a 23-7 defeat.

Catholic won its third straight 3A state title.

Weddington won 34-14 against Lee County in the 3AA championship game in Raleigh for its second straight state title.
