RICHMOND, Va. — Catawba’s men’s basketball team won 84-69 at Virginia Union on Wednesday.

Four Indians scored in double figures. Larry McLeod (19 points), Marcell Haskett (18), Devin Cooper (16) and Zaqwuan Matthews (11) led the Indians.

Catawba (2-1) shot well on 3-pointers (13-for-23) and got to the foul line often enough to attempt 36 free throws. The Indians made 27 foul shots, while the Panthers (0-3) made nine.

Men’s basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson)  went 12-for-12 from the foul line and scored 20 points as the  DCCC Storm rolled 139-84 against Central Carolina CC on Wednesday.

Women’s basketball

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 10 points and five rebounds for  UNC Pembroke in Wednesday’s 63-60 win against Fayetteville State.

McKenzie Gadson (Carson) was in the starting lineup for Anderson and had  five  points and two rebounds in Wednesday’s  67-42 romp against Claflin.

Bryanna Troutman (Salisbury) had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Wingate in 59-48 win against JC Smith on Wednesday in the Bulldogs’ home opener.

College football

Florida A&M had an open week but stayed No. 1 in the BOXTOROW HBCU media poll.

Bowie State, a CIAA school, is No. 2. Next are South Carolina State, NC A&T and Alcorn State.

  The South Atlantic Conference has three teams in the Super Region 2 rankings.

  Lenoir-Rhyne moved back to No. 2, with Wingate checking in at No. 4, and Carson-Newman jumping up to the No. 5 spot.

Lenoir-Rhyne plays at Catawba on Saturday.

College soccer

Five SAC women’s soccer teams are ranked in the Southeast Region.

   Lenoir-Rhyne came in at No. 2, with Wingate moving up to No. 6, and Queens jumping to No. 7.

Catawba fell to No. 8, while Lincoln Memorial moved to the No. 9 spot.

Catawba sophomore Katie Beck was named SAC  Defensive Player of the Year.

Beck was joined on the All-SAC first team by junior midfielder Jovana Sanchez. Earning second team honors were senior forward Shelby Vasich and senior goalkeeper Shelby Thompson.

Beck anchors a Catawba Indian defense that has surrendered just 15 goals during the season.

Catawba sophomore midfielder Ben Bielby was the lone Catawba Indian to earn postseason All-SAC  men’s soccer honors. He was named honorable mention.

College cross country

Catawba’s Matthew Fowler and Hannah Mercer made all-region.

  

Salisbury YMCA

  The J.F. Hurley YMCA is taking registrations for boys basketball. Register until Jan. 8.

Basketball is offered to ages 6-14 and teaches fundamentals, skills and sportsmanship.

Salisbury hosts Mount Pleasant in a 2AA playoff game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Mid. school hoops

Shamya Arnold scored 19 points to lead the Knox girls to a 42-15 win against Southeast.

Aniya Brown scored 13 points and had eight steals for the Trojans (4-3).

The Knox boys rolled 56-35 against Southeast.

The Trojans (5-2) were led by Bryson Cowan (12 points), Deshawn Brown (11) and Desmond Adams (7).

Local golf   

Dan Hendricks had a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 10 at The Revival Golf Course at the Crescent on Monday.

He used an 8-iron on the 134-yard shot. Gary Marshall witnessed the feat.

Low ‘A’  Flight player was Phil Cauble with a net of 60.51. Low ‘B’ Flight player was David Schenk with a net of 66.68. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ben Moore with a net of 63.78.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Clive Mahaffey with a net of 65.39.

Larry Petrea shot a 70 for low gross, while Phil Cauble had low net.

Petrea eagled the par-5 No. 6 hole.

Cauble eagled the par-5 17th.
