In the 3A State Championships at Foxfire, East Rowan sophomore Colby Patterson shot 39-37 — 76 and is tied for 16th after Monday’s first round.

Patterson made an eagle on the par 5 No. 9 hole to help off-set two double bogeys. He also made two birdies.

Charlotte Catholic’s Jack Heath shot 3-under 69 for the first-round lead.

In the 2A State Championships held at Longleaf,  South Rowan junior Andrew Jackson turned in a steady round of 41-37 — 78.

Jackson made 10 pars, seven bogeys and one birdie. He’s tied for 11th at 6-over par.

Also competing in the 2A Championships is Salisbury junior Hank Robins, who shot 40-42 — 82 and is tied for 26th at 10-over.

Robins made three birdies, but he had two triple bogeys.

Midway’s Logan Patrick shot 71 for the first-round lead.

College golf

  UNC Greensboro had a strong first round in the Stanford Regional and is in second place at 275, one stroke behind Stanford.

The Spartans are  ahead of three teams ranked in the top 25 in No. 2 Arizona State, No. 14 LSU and No. 24 North Carolina State.

Sophomore Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) is tied for ninth place after posting a 2-under 68 in the first round.  After finishing the back-nine at 1-over 36, the sophomore recorded a 3-under 32 on the front-nine.

Junior Jonathan Brightwell (67) is tied for fifth place after carding a 3-under 67 in the first round.

Senior Bryce Hendrix (71) ended the day at 1-under 69 and is  tied for 15th place.

College baseball

  The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee announced its field of 56 teams that will participate in the 2019 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship on Sunday.

Newberry, Catawba and Lincoln Memorial will represent the South Atlantic Conference in the double-elimination tournament, which will be held at 16 regional sites May 16-18.

  Newberry earned the No. 2 seed, and the Wolves will be a sub-regional host site, with No. 3 Catawba and No. 6 Young Harris traveling to Newberry, S.C.

The other sub-regional will be played at No. 1 seed North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., and includes No. 4 seed Mount Olive and No. 5 seed Lincoln Memorial.

Winners of the sub-regional sites will advance to the best of three-series Southeast Regional Final May 24-25.

The winners of the eight regionals will advance to the finals of the 2019 NCAA DII Baseball Championship will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Center in Cary on June 1-8.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples  had a great round of golf on Mother’s Day.

The team of Susan Wydner, Azalee and David Huneycutt won the event.

Crystal Clement and Mary & Gene Seaford came in second.

Wydner had longest putt.  Azalee Huneycutt had closest to the pin.

Mid. school soccer

West Rowan’s boys lost 3-2 to Erwin in the conference tournament.

Juan Calleja, Black Pope, and Adrian Aragon were strong defensively for West, and Jose Hernandez made nine saves in goal.

Gio Romero scored both West goals.   Juan Arteaga, David Carrillo and Dylan Parrish were offensive standouts.

West finished 3-8-4.

West Rowan’s girls beat China Grove 9-0  in the first round of the tournament.

Anna Mead had five goals and two assists. Brittany Vanhoose had two goals and  four assists. Lesli Guerrero had two goals and an assist.

Erwin’s boys finished the regular season with a 5-3 win against Corriher-Lipe.

Carter Honeycutt led the Eagles (8-4-2) with two  goals and an assist.  Gabe Honeycutt, Kevin Mastranunizo and Ivan Landaverde  had a goal each.  Nathan Taylor had an assist.

Gavin Gullett recorded the win in goal with 10 saves.

Erwin’s girls won 7-2 against Corriher-Lipe to close the regular season.

Allie Martin led the Eagles with three goals.  Tatum James had two goals and an assist.

Mariah Lowder and Diana Hernanadez scored their first middle school goals.

Lindsey Cook and Mariah Lowder had two assists each, while Tatum James  had one. Bethany Brady recorded the win in goal with five saves.

Intimidators

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  ­ — Luis Curbelo hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 6-2 win over the West Virginia Power on Monday. The Intimidators swept the three-game series with the win.

The grand slam by Curbelo scored Romy Gonzalez, Ian Dawkins, and Alex Destino and was the game’s last scoring play.

Vince Arobio (2-1) got the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while West Virginia starter Josias De Los Santos (0-3) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

For the Power, Onil Pena homered and doubled, driving in two runs.
