MOUNT ULLA — With East Rowan’s softball team down to its last strike, Maddie Trexler belted a two-run triple in the seventh inning to propel the Mustangs to a 2-1 win against Carson on Wednesday.

Haley Strange pitched a two-hitter for the Mustangs in the North Piedmont Conference semifinal matchup.

Carson pitcher Katie Jewell took a 1-0 lead to the top of the seventh. She got the first out in the seventh, but  hit Karley Teague with a pitch. Jewell got a strikeout for the second out, but  then she hit Mac Misenheimer with a pitch to set the table for East’s leadoff batter Trexler.

Trexler got down in the count 0-and-2, but worked the count full before driving her big hit to left field.

Jewell struck out six, walked one and hit three.

Strange struck out two and walked four.

Carson scored in the second when Liza Simmerson singled, advanced on Allie Burns’ groundout, stole third, and scored on Katelyn McGee’s groundout. That run held up until the seventh.

Third-seeded East (13-8) advanced to Friday’s 6 p.m. championship game against top-seeded host West Rowan.

Carson (15-9) will be in the state playoffs. East and Carson have split four games this season.

MOUNT ULLA — Mary Sobataka hit a grand slam and Whitley Arnott pitched a one-hitter to lead West Rowan to a 10-0 romp against South Iredell in a North Piedmont Conference semifinal on Wednesday.

Sobataka’s grand slam came in the second inning.

In the fourth, Sobataka hit a two-run double for a six-RBI night, and Reagan Haggas followed with a two-run homer. Kenadi Sproul scored three runs for the Falcons (19-3), while Taylor Poole scored two.

Top-seeded North Davidson got homers from  Megan Donovant, Regan Spencer and Haden Womble and beat Ledford 8-3 in the Central Carolina Conference Tournament championship game on Wednesday at Ledford.

Top-seeded Central Cabarrus won against Northwest Cabarrus in a South Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinal on Wednedsay, 6-2.

The Vikings scored five runs in the first inning.

Brantleigh Parrott struck out 11 Trojans. Parrott and Christina Brendle had two hits each.

Lauren Ritchie’s grand slam and five RBIs led A.L. Brown to a 10-9 win over Cox Mill in the other SPC semifinal on Wednesday.

Davie County was eliminated from the Central Piedmont Conference Tournament with a 3-2 loss to East Forsyth on Tuesday.

Karli Queen and Sydney Wyatt drove in runs for the War Eagles (9-12).

High school tennis

North Rowan made the state playoffs for the first time since 2003, but the Cavaliers lost on the road in Wednesday’s first round to Thomas Jefferson Academy, a school in Rutherford County.

North lost several close matches. North’s No. 1 player Hans Roemer won 7-6, 6-2 in singles and teamed with J.D. Hager for an 8-4 doubles win. North (9-7) also got an 8-6 doubles victory from Lee Patterson/Joe Fofana.

Team members are Roemer, Hager, Ray Montes, Terrance Settlemyer, Arizona Day, Garrett Jennings, Patterson, and Fofana.   They were coached by head coach Michael Brooks, who was assisted by Jeff Price and Jeremy Price.

West Rowan lost at Mount Tabor in the first round of the 3A dual team state playoffs on Wednesday, 5-2.

Steve Wilmot and Trevor Mervine won in singles for the Falcons. Wilmot went undefeated this season.

West (10-4) also was ahead in the No. 2 doubles match that wasn’t completed.

CCC track and field

Ledford’s girls and North Davidson’s boys took first place in the 10-team Central Carolina Conference Championships hosted by Oak Grove on Wednesday.

South Rowan’s girls placed second with 114.5 points.

Taylor Chapman won the 100 hurdles and was third in the 300 hurdles. Janiya Downs won the long jump, took second in the high jump and was fourth in the 200.

Madison Lowery had seconds in the 1600 and 3200 and was fourth in the 800. Kira Rymer placed second in the discus, and the Raiders had seconds in the 4×100 and 4×800.

• Leah Cressler led Salisbury’s ninth-place girls with a third in the  1600 and a fifth in the 800.

North Davidson’s boys won the CCC Championships on Wednesday.

South Rowan placed sixth. Noah Julian won the 1600 and 3200. Scott Stephens was third in the 100 and 200.  Brenden Finger was third in the high jump.

• Salisbury placed ninth despite an outstanding meet from Tyrone Johnson, who won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump and 100 meters.

SPC track and field

KANNAPOLIS —  A.L. Brown’s boys won Tuesday’s South Piedmont Conference Track and Field Championships behind big  performances by Josh Parks and Jalen Neal.

Neal swept the 100 (11.22 seconds), 200 (22.32) and 400 (51.39) sprints and anchored the winning 4×200 team.

Parks won the 110 hurdles (14.69), 300 hurdles (39.98),  the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and the triple jump (43-4).

A.L. Brown also won the 4×800.

The Wonders scored 171 points. Runner-up Cox Mill  had 118.

Cox Mill won the girls championship, with Northwest Cabarrus second.

High school baseball

MOUNT ULLA — Carson got three-run homers from Luke Barringer and CP Pyle and beat North Iredell 11-6 in a North Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinal on Wednesday at West Rowan.

Barringer’s three-run homer in the third inning triggered an eight-run inning for the top-seeded Cougars (21-3).

After North Iredell fought back within 8-6, Pyle’s three-run homer in the sixth, his first  of the season, gave the Cougars some breathing room.

Cole Hales had three hits for  Carson. Ryan Street went 2-for-2.

On the mound, Deacon Wike pitched five innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four. He got relief help from Aaron Misenheimer and Street.

Carson advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. championship game against second-seeded East Rowan.

PFAFFTOWN — Davie County’s baseball team kept rolling on Wednesday.

Davie (21-2) scored seven in the first three innings and held off East Forsyth in a Central Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinal on Wednesday, 8-4.

Garrett Chandler homered. Troy Clary had two doubles and two RBIs.

Carson Whisenhunt was the winning pitcher.

Zach Zedalis pitched a no-hitter to lead Cox Mill to a 10-0 win against A.L. Brown in a South Piedmont Conference semifinal played on Wednesday.

Nick Alderfer hit a grand slam during Cox Mill’s seven-run first inning.

Michael Gracer pitched    Northwest Cabarrus to a 6-1 win against Concord in the other SPC semifinal on Wednesday.

High school soccer

Salisbury’s girls overcame a slow start to defeat South Rowan 6-1 on Senior Night at Ludwig Stadium.

Salisbury celebrated the careers of seniors  Rainey Dunham, Ellen Simons, Lila Harry  and Olivia Dagenhart.

Pipe Muire scored two goals, with  Lillie Rusher, Ellen Simons, Sutton Webb and Caroline Colwell getting one each. Assists were credited to Muire (2) and Rusher (2).

Tied for first with West Davidson, Salisbury finishes CCC play tonight at Ledford.

Carson plays at South Iredell tonight. Carson can share the North Piedmont Conference title if it can beat the Vikings. South Iredell won in overtime at Carson on Monday.

East Rowan and Statesville battled to a scoreless tie on Tuesday in NPC soccer.

College baseball

In the Southeast Region  poll released on Wednesday, Catawba is ranked third.

Newberry is ranked second. Lincoln Memorial is ranked sixth, with Wingate seventh.

Catawba earned the SAC’s automatic bid to the  Division II Southeast Region Championship by winning the SAC tournament.

College golf

After winning the Southern Conference Championship for the second-straight year, UNC Greensboro’s men’s golf team will represent the conference in the NCAA Regionals at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

The three-day regional will begin on Monday, May 13 and conclude on Wednesday, May 15.

  

West basketball camp

Falcon basketball camp at West Rowan will have  sessions on June 17-20 and July 8-11.

Camps are for boys and girls, rising second-graders through rising ninth-graders. Camp is from 9 until noon. The cost is $60 per camp or $100 for both sessions. Campers received a Falcon T-shirt was well as top-flight instruction from coach Mike Gurley and his players. Call 704-798-2074.

Mid. school baseball

  West Rowan Middle defeated Knox on Wednesday, 21-1. The Bulldogs (5-3) were led by Brice Knox with thre hits and Aaron Russell and Tyler Kepley with 5 RBIs each.
