GRANITE QUARRY — Haley Strange hit a home run and pitched a shutout to lead East Rowan to a 6-0 North Piedmont Conference softball win against Carson on Thursday.

Strange held Carson to five hits and struck out four.

East (9-4, 4-3) bounced back from Wednesday’s lopsided loss to West Rowan and stifled the second-place Cougars (10-6, 5-2).

Kaitlyn Samples drove in a run early to put the Mustangs ahead.

Ashlyn Fritz and Mac Misenheimer had two hits each for East.

West Rowan stayed unbeaten in the NPC by pounding North Iredell on Thursday, 11-0.

Whitley Arnott pitched the five-inning shutout and struck out 11.

Mary Sobataka homered and scored three runs for the Falcons (13-2, 8-0), who are closing in on the NPC  championship.

KK Dowling went 3-for-3 for West. Taylor Walton had two hits, and Kenadi Sproul scored two runs.

Davie County held off Glenn in Thursday’s Central Piedmont Conference game, 6-5.

Emma Patterson had three hits for the War Eagles (6-7, 3-3).  Winning pitcher Rachel Bostic knocked in two runs.  Sydney Smith got the final out for a save.

North Davidson beat Thomasville 18-0 in a CCC game on Thursday.

Riley Lingerfelt pitched a perfect game in the three-inning contest, and Lexi Bryant hit a grand slam.

Kali Morton pitched a strong game and Hailey Lane doubled and tripled to lead Mooresville to an 11-1 win against Hopewell on Thursday.

Mariah Pearson drove in three runs.

HS girls basketball

Carson’s McKenzie Gadson will be the program’s first player in the East-West All-Star Game.

Coach Brooke Stouder announced Gadson, who signed with Anderson, has accepted the invitiation to play.

Gadson averaged 14.3 points and 6.3 rebounds for a 27-3 team.

HS football

As reported earlier, Salisbury DB/kick returner Cam Gill will play in the East-West All-Star football game. Official rosters were released on Thursday.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Joe Camara, a defensive lineman who signed with Catawba, also will play for the West team.

HS baseball

East Rowan pummeled Statesville on Thursday, 14-0, for a North Piedmont Conference win.

Blake White (1-0) pitched the five-inning shutout for the Mustangs (9-8, 5-3).  He struck out five and allowed four hits.

Corbin Durham homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Wayne Mize smacked two doubles and drove in four runs.

Charlie Klingler scored three runs. Bryson Wagner scored three runs and drove in two. Avery Shull had two RBIs.

South Rowan scored eight runs in the fourth inning to break open a close non-conference game and beat Uwharrie Charter in five innings on Thursday, 12-2. Jarrid Nelson (5-1) did the pitching for the Raiders (11-8). He allowed three hits and struck out six.

Nathan Chrismon had two hits and scored three runs. Jack Weaver drove in three. Bryson Bebber had two hits and two RBIs. Nelson went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs.

North Stanly’s Rhett Lowder struck out 18 batters in Thursday’s 8-3 Yadkin Valley Conference win against North Moore.

Hunter Sells drove in three runs for the Comets (15-2, 12-1).

Davie County came back from a five-run deficit to get to extra innings, but the War Eagles lost at East Forsyth, 12-10, when Matt Rivers hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Carson Whisenhunt homered for Davie.

Zach Zedalis pitched a no-hitter and struck out 12 in Cox Mill’s 5-0 South Piedmont Conference win on Thursday against Central Cabarrus.

In a South Piedmont  Conference game played in  Kannapolis, Chandler Teal’s walk-off hit lifted A.L. Brown to  4-3 win against Robinson.

Jacob Baucom pitched a complete game for the Wonders. Antonio Knight had two hits and scored two runs.

HS boys tennis

East Rowan won against North Iredell on Thursday, 9-0, in a North Piedmont Conference match.

Nick Shoemaker, Landon Shuping, Gavin McDaniel, Garren Hudson, Billy McGee and Jaden Collins won in singles.

Shoemaker/Shuping, McGee/Collins and Hudson/Drew Roane were winning doubles teams.

Mid. school football

Knox’s Anthony Dodd, was  defensive line MVP at the USA Football National Team Camp held on April 6-7 at South Pointe High in Rock Hill, S.C.

He’s been invited to play in the national bowl game for middle school players held in Canton, Ohio.

Mid. school track

West Rowan’s boys and Erwin’s girls won conference championships on Thursday.

The Knox boys finished second.

Mid. school baseball

Jake Ross and Jacob Efird hit home runs to lead China Grove to a 17-3 win against Southeast.

Mid. school soccer

West Rowan battled to a 1-all tie with Ewin.

Goalie Jose Hernandez made eight saves for the Bulldogs.   Juan Calleja stood out on defense, David Carrillo assisted on goal by  Franco Reyes.

West’s girls (6-1) won 4-1 against Erwin. Anna Mead scored three goals in the last 12 minutes for West. Brittany Vanhoose scored a goal. Assists were by   Mead, Lesli Guerrero, Vanhoose and Lily Carrillo-Cuevas.

Rowan Legion

Rowan County Americn Legion baseball sign-ups are scheduled for Sunday, April 14 , at 3 p.m. at    Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 in Salisbury.

Players will need to bring a copy of their driver’s license or a birth certificate. Insurance forms will be filled out, so a parent needs to be present to sign. A notary will be on hand.

Parks and Rec

Rowan County Parks and Recreation-Therapeutic Recreation Division is hosting the 31st Annual VIP Miniature Golf Tournament at Dan Nicholas Park.

The tournament will be held Saturday, April 13, beginning at 10 a.m.

This tournament is a statewide event for individuals who have visual impairments.
