West Rowan’s Chloe Patterson (soccer, swimming and cheerleading) was named on Monday as one of the NCHSAA’s 31 “Heart of a Champion” honorees.

Patterson will be honored on Saturday, April 13, in Chapel Hill for outstanding sportsmanship and citizenship.

She was nominated by West Rowan AD Todd Bell.

HS basketball

East Rowan’s Elton Hooper announced a commitment to Catawba Valley Community College.

Hooper averaged a double-double for the Mustangs.

HS track and field

A.L. Brown’s Josh Parks broke both school records in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles on Monday.

Both marks had been set by Keenan Lott in 1992.

HS baseball

THOMASVILLE — South Rowan’s baseball team scored nine runs in the third inning and demolished Thomasville in Monday’s Central Carolina Conference game, 15-0.

Winning pitcher Luke Hiskey struck out five and allowed one hit. Andrew Jones had two doubles and two RBIs for South (7-7, 5-6). Jack Weaver went 2-for-3. Kory Moss and Ty Hubbard drove in two runs each. Hubbard and Jarrid Nelson had doubles.

South plays at West Rowan on Thursday.

HS soccer

Sutton Webb scored three goals as Salisbury beat South Rowan in Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match, 9-0.

Lillie Rusher scored two goals for the Hornets (11-1), while Piper Muire, Anna Grace Woolly, Katherine Sullivan and Ellen Simons had one each.

Assists were credited to Rusher (4), Woolly,  Simons, Caroline Colwell and Elle Kennedy.

Caroline Clark and Katherine Sullivan combined for the shutout in goal.  Salisbury got excellent play from Olivia Dagenhart, Lila Harry and Rainey Dunham.

Salisbury is at Thomasville Wednesday night and at home on Thursday against East Davidson.

  

HS golf

Salisbury resident Charlie Barr shot 75-70 to finish 1-over and won the  HV3 Invitational at Cramer Mountain Golf Course in Cramerton by three shots.

The HV3 Invitational is hosted by  professional golfer Harold Varner III.

Fort Mill finished first out of 12 schools in team scoring. Barr plays for Cannon School, which finished third. Twelve schools participated.

Cannon School won a state championship in 2018, and Barr made All-State as a freshman.  Barr tied for first in his previous tournament, the Tanglewood High School Invitational with a 3-0ver 73.

In Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Lexington Golf Club, Oak Grove shot 166 to win by five strokes over West Davidson. Salisbury (181) was fifth, while South Rowan (183) was sixth.

South’s Andrew Jackson shot 38, while Andrew Coward shot 39.  Jackson tied for medalist honors with West Davidson’s Quin Foster.

Leading Salisbury were  Will Fowler (42) and Hank Robins (43).

HS softball

South Rowan pounded East Davidson in Central Carolina Conference softball on Monday, 16-5.

Zoie Miller pitched a complete game for South (2-8, 2-7).

Madison McGuire and Kaylee Nelson had triples.

Courtney Mullins had three of South’s 15 hits.

McGuire and McKinley Faw had three RBIs apiece.  Ashlyn Plott and Anna Blume had two hits each.

Caitlyn Sechrist drove in the only run for Davie County in a 12-1 loss to Forbush on Monday.

HS tennis

West Rowan won against Carson on Monday, 6-3, and took over second place in the North Piedmont Conference standings.

South Iredell is on top.

Carson winners were Cameron Dunn and Nathaniel Kimball in singles and Ethen Fesperman/Avery Paschal in doubles.

College basketball

Livingstone junior guard Roger Ray was named to BOXTOROW’s HBCU All-America team.

College baseball

Redshirt freshman Austin Love (West Rowan) has been outstanding in relief for UNC baseball (22-7, 7-5 ACC).

Love has pitched in 18 games and is 5-1 with three saves and a 2.81 ERA. He’s struck out 27 while walking only four.

UNC shortstop Ike Freeman (East Rowan) is having a strong junior season.

He’s batting .333 with four homers and 23 RBIs.

Freeman had two hits, two RBIs and three walks as the Tar Heels finished a sweep of Duke on Sunday.

College track & field

In the Raleigh Relays on Friday, Charlotte’s Zach Marchinko (Carson)  produced the third-fastest school time in history in the 10,000 meters  with a PR 29:27.08.

DURHAM —  Charles Foster, who won five NAIA and NCAA individual national championships and was the top-ranked hurdler in the world during his collegiate career at North Carolina Central University, passed away on Sunday   at the age of 65.

He placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

Women’s golf

In the Bryan National Collegiate held in Browns Summit, East Carolina’s Carley Cox (China Grove) shot 74-77-74 — 225 and tied for 37th. Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 78-72-76 – 226 and tied for 40th.

In the recent Briar’s Creek Invitational in Charleston, S.C., East Carolina’s  Yatawara (Salisbury) shot   68-79-75—222 and tied for 26th.

  

Mid. school baseball

West Rowan outlasted Southeast Middle, 13-11

Titus Brooks was the winner in relief.

The Bulldogs (2-1) were led at the plate by Andrew Helmbold with three hits.  Koen Franz, Lucas Graham, Matthew Connolly, and Drew Burton had two hits each.

West Rowan defeated Corriher-Lipe 10-4 on Monday behind the strong pitching of Lucas Graham.

The Bulldogs (3-1) were led at the plate by Franz with a home run, and timely hitting from Graham, Burton and Aaron Russell.

West plays Knox at home on Wednesday.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice on Sunday.

Ralph Craver and Gene & Mary Seaford took first place, with  Walt Kincaid and David & Azalee Huneycutt taking second.

Azalee Huneycutt won closest to pin and  longest putt.

On Saturday, the McCanless Couples held a kickoff tournament.

Sharon Miller made a hole-in-one on No. 12.

Larry Clifton, Crystal Clement and  Rick Honeycutt took first place.

Miller and Susan Houston took second place.

Pin placements were won by Ricky Honeycutt (No. 3 and No. 8), Miller (No. 12) and  Terrol Kendall (No. 14).

Overseas basketball

Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is still doing well for the Den Bosch New Heroes in the Dutch Basketball League. Sherrill is the starting point guard for a 20-7 team and averages 12.5 points, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals.

Keshun Sherrill’s big brother, K.J., is playing well for Koblenz in Germany. K.J. is the starting center for a 23-2 team and averages 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds. He’s shooting 61 percent from the field.
