English-Speaking Union hosts expert on Native American history
RSVP deadline Feb. 18
The next meeting of the ESU will have Dr. Daniel Cobb speaking on “Independence Won and Lost: The American Revolution in Indian Country.”
Cobb is an associate professor at UNC Chapel Hill in the Department of American Studies and he spent 2017-2018 at the University of Helsinki as Fulbright Bicentennial Chair in American Studies.
In 2016 The Teaching Company released his “Great Courses on Native Peoples of North America,” a 24-lecture audio and video course created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian.
He has written four books on Native American history and is currently writing a biography of Ponca activist Clyde Warrior, one of the most important intellectuals and rights movement leaders of the 1960s.
The ESU meets at the Country Club of Salisbury at 6:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 7 p.m. The cost of dinner is $32/pp and reservations are required at 704-216-2660 or gwood@gerrywoodauto.com.

Save the Date: Sweet Potato Queens Mardi Gras Bash
Saturday, Feb. 23, 6:30–10:30 in the evening at the Harold B. Jarrett Legion Post, 1024 Lincolnton Road. Tickets $35 per person. Proceeds benefit the Novant Health Wallace Cancer Center. Enjoy a dinner, dancing, silent auction, half & half and raffles plus a dinner catered by Debbie Suggs and  music by King Tunes. Beer and wine will be served.

The Sweet Potato Queens, who have raised funds for Relay for Life for the past 18 years, are a fun-loving group of spirited women who are very serious about raising money to fight cancer….you can recognize us by our red wigs and our tiaras. Organized in 2001 as a Relay for Life team, the Queens raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the American Cancer Society. This year our team of 25 women will be raising money for the Wallace Cancer Center, a comprehensive facility that will meet all of a cancer patient’s needs under one roof. New at Biltmore — A Vanderbilt House Party: The Gilded Age
ASHEVILLE — Biltmore House becomes the scene of a festive celebration hosted by George and Edith Vanderbilt in a new exhibition, A Vanderbilt House Party: The Gilded Age.
Sourced from information gleaned from letters, photographs and documents in the Vanderbilt archives, this experience will put today’s visitors into the action of the time when the Vanderbilts entertained family and friends for extended visits to Biltmore House. The Vanderbilts’ clothing, re-created by Academy Award-winning costumier John Bright, will be featured along with a new audio-guided tour to draw listeners into the preparations for a celebration in Biltmore House.

One of Billy Graham’s greatest passions was equipping his fellow believers to share the Gospel. Come discover how the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association encouraged, trained, and inspired these evangelists, whom Billy said would be “the next Billy Graham.” Go behind the scenes of the historic Itinerant Evangelism conferences in Amsterdam in 1983, 1986, and 2000 through stories, memorabilia and photos.
