Area sports briefs: Salisbury jayvees beat North

Salisbury’s jayvee football team beat North Rowan 42-8 in Spencer on Thursday.
B.J. Woods scored Salisbury’s first touchdown on a 48-yard punt return. Brian Bauk had a 6-yard scoring run and threw a 24-yard TD pass to John Hall. Hanson Saryee had scoring runs of 10 and 28 yards for the Hornets (3-1).Braylon Dailey had a 3-yard run for a touchdown. Michael Mazur was 6-for-6 on PATs.
Sam Humble blocked a punt for the Hornets. Woods intercepted a pass. Garrett Yelton recovered a fumble. Linebacker Kiero Cuthbertson and DB Tion McCain led the defense.
* A.L. Brown beat Kings Mountain 25-13. Keeon Johnson, Demetrius Jackson, Brandon Harding and Damien Washington scored TDs for the Wonders (3-0).
The Wonders rushed for 146 yards and threw for 113 against the previously unbeaten Mountaineers.
* Mooresville topped West Rowan 36-24, and South Rowan beat Central Cabarrus 6-0.
– Cross country
Gray Stone’s boys and girls teams won a cross country meet at the 5K East Rowan YMCA course Thursday.
Gray Stone won the girls meet with 27 points. It was followed by Carson (37) and East Rowan (61).
Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer was first overall in 22:23. Teammates Amber Watkins (second, 22:49). Janna Featherstone (fourth, 23:32) and Mary Bergstresser (seventh, 26:06) also finished in the top 10.
Sierra Zemanick (third, 22:59) led Carson. Teammates Jordan Murdock (fifth, 23:39), Devan Purvis (eighth, 25:25) and Alex Hunter (ninth, 25:57) were in the top 10.
Kristen Hatley (sixth, 24:38), Ashley-Kate Kesler (10th, 26:00) and Jenny Hughes (11th, 26:00) led East.
* Gray Stone’s boys won with 22 points. The Knights were followed by East (34), Carson (82) and North Hills (120). Gray Stone’s Dalton Wally was the top individual in 17:58.
Gray Stone’s Harrison Latimer (third, 18:28), Kaleb Medlin (fifth, 18:46), Mygel Bergstresser (sixth, 18:57) and Elden Zacek (seventh, 19:33) were among the top 10.
Ross Oden (second, 18:10) led East. Cole Honeycutt (fourth, 18:34), Eli Walton (eighth, 19:54) and Mark Almeida (ninth, 20:04) also came in the top 10. Nick Golden (12th, 20:12) paced the Cougars along with Chase Johnson (16th, 21:11) and Jacob Fink (17th, 21:12).
Carson, East Rowan, Salisbury and West Stanly will compete at Gray Stone’s home course at Chuck Morehead Park in Albemarle next Thursday afternoon.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) finished his season with 19 homers, 58 RBIs and a .315 batting average in 73 games during stints at Ogden and Great Lakes in the L.A. Dodgers farm system.
– Middle school tennis
Sacred Heart beat South Davie 9-0. Jordan DeJaco, Meghan Hedgepeth, Jessica Roy, Anna Tonseth, Caroline Chilton and Erin Roy won singles matches for the Dolphins (3-2). DeJaco-Hedgepeth, the Roy sisters and Chilton-Tonseth were doubles winners.

Sacred Heart plays Salisbury Academy at City Park on Tuesday.
– Middle school football
West Rowan’s eighth-grade football team beat Corriher-Lope 30-0.
Daisean Reddick scored on all four of his first-half touches for the Bulldogs (2-0). He caught a 48-yard TD from Michael Pinkston and a 39-yard TD pass from Nick Collins. He ran for a 69-yard TD and returned an interception 41 yards.
Derrick Fortson scored a pair of two-point conversions, and Keyows Weeks scored one.
West led 30-0 at halftime.
West’s defense was led by Nick Collins, Jesse Moore, Keyows Weeks, Malik Crudup, Tyler Kennedy, and Donnavan Sherrill. Broderick Avery had an interception, and Ezekial Blackwood played well on special teams.
– Golf tournament
The third annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament will be held at Corbin Hills on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m.
The format is captain’s choice. The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.
Lunch is included in the entry fee. Individual and corporate sponsorships are welcomed.
