SALISBURY — Rowan County authorities say a 12-year-old boy was struck with a potato while at a friend’s house. The boy was hit in the eye.

On Sunday, a sheriff’s deputy went to the boy’s home in the 200 block of Gallimore Road.

The boy had gone to a friend’s house. The girlfriend of his friend’s brother was cleaning the floor and told him to get out because he was tracking in mud.

According to the boy, she then tossed a potato at him. He said he couldn’t open his eye for a few minutes, then he ran home.

The girlfriend talked to the deputy and the boy’s mother. She said she did not intentionally toss the spud and he ran away before she had a chance to check on him and apologize.

The deputy said he would speak with the district attorney to find out if charges should be filed for assault on a minor.
