Vocalist selected
Emil Foster has been accepted into the Studio Division of La Musica Lirica. This six week vocal program starting June 20 is an international music program for young vocal artists in Novafeltria, Italy (Rimini).
Foster will be assigned opera roles for opera workshop performances and will be performing for the Studio Division concerts while in Italy. He will also participate in the chorus of the main stage operas.
During the first four weeks he will receive intensive Italian classes, voice lessons, coachings, opera workshop and diction classes in addition to his performances. These classes prepare students for their concert performances in Rome and Rimini, Italy.
He will be under the direction of the opera coach, Carroll Freeman, a former opera coach for Teresa Moore-Mitchell.
Foster began singing in church at the age of 5. He graduated from Livingstone College this spring with a major in music and a minor in theater arts. Moore-Mitchell became his voice instructor after the death of his teacher, Dr. Frank Perry.
Foster was a section leader in Livingstone’s marching band for four years and president of the Concert Choir for two years. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi national honorary band fraternity, a former Blue Bear Ambassador, Blue Bear Buddy and tour guide for the institution.
He is currently performing a supporting role in the Piedmont Player’s production of “Crowns” at the Meroney Theater in Downtown Salisbury.
Foster is required to raise funds to attend the Italian vocal arts program. His goal is to raise $7750 to cover tuition, housing, purchase of music and airfare.
There will be a fundraising concert on Sunday, June 7, at 5 p.m. at Soldier’s Memorial AME Zion Church, 306 N. Church St. In addition to Foster, soloists will include Dr. Grant Harrison, Joanne Harrison, Rebecca Stinson and Teresa Moore-Mitchell.

Art on Easy Street
The Rowan Arts Council has extended the application deadline for artists applying to the Art on Easy Street Summer Art Festival. The new deadline is May 29.
The council will be closing a larger portion of Lee Street, allowing more space for artists’ booths than in previous years. The percentage of spaces for jewelers has already been reached so the Arts Council will not be accepting any additional applications for jewelry work. Entertainment and food vendor spaces have also been filled.
The Art on Easy Street Summer Art Festival is in its 6th year and is part of Salisbury’s “Day of the Arts” celebration. The festival will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, June 20 in the Easy Street parking lot, the 100 block of East Liberty Street and the 200-400 blocks of North Lee Street in downtown Salisbury. The event is free and open to the public.
Other events include Waterworks Family Fun Day in the Trolley Barn, Rail Walk Arts District special functions, the Salisbury Symphony Musical Petting Zoo and an evening play by the St. Thomas Players.
Interested artists should contact the Rowan Arts Council at 704-638-9887, email rac@rowanarts.org or visit www.rowanarts.org.
