Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury, West stay unbeaten in tennis

Salisbury’s girls tennis team won against North Davidson on Thursday, 9-0.

North Davidson had been unbeaten in the league.

Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery and Sophie Chmiel won singles matches. Nianouris/Burton, Mowery/Thurman and Campion/Chmiel were doubles winners.

The  Hornets (9-0, 8-0) are 180-0 in the  Central Carolina Conference during the last 16 seasons. They haven’t lost a league match since Lexington beat them in 2002.

Salisbury plays at South Rowan on Monday.

West Rowan also stayed undefeated on Thursday, beating Statesville, 9-0, for a North Piedmont Conference win.

West (8-0, 2-0) got singles wins from Payton Holt, Madison Smith, Lacy Waggoner, Skylar Jahnke, Mira White and Kelsie Crider.

Winning doubles teams were Holt/Waggoner, Smith/Crider and Jahnke/White.

West Rowan hosts East Rowan on Tuesday.

Carson lost to South Iredell, 6-3, in NPC action on Thursday.

Central Davidson beat South Rowan, 8-1, in a CCC match on Thursday.

Davie County (5-0) beat West Forsyth, 7-2, on Thursday to start Central Piedmont Conference play.

Prep boys soccer

East Rowan won against Davie County, 6-3, in a non-conference match on Thursday.

Alex Kalogeromitros scored three goals. James Lomax scored two, and Reuben Leslie had one. Austin Lloyd had an assist.

West Rowan (0-5-2) and South Rowan (4-3-2) battled to a 1-all tie on Thursday in non-conference play.

Kenneth Ortiz scored for the Falcons on a free kick three minutes in.

South Rowan leveled the  match with 20 minutes left on a goal by Eber Tapia. Cameron Phillips had the assist.

• West’s jayvees beat South, 1-0.  Hector Perez scored the goal on an assist from Johnny Alvarez.

Chris Mercado played a solid game in net to preserve the win.

A.L. Brown won against Mooresville, 4-2, on Thursday.

Prep volleyball

South Rowan won against Thomasville 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15 in Central Carolina Conference action on Thursday.

Anna Rymer had 22 assists for the Raiders (7-3, 5-1), who are still tied for first place. Kira Rymer had 17 kills. Janiya Downs had 16 kills. Payton Black had nine digs. Ashlyn Faw had five aces.

Carson lost for the first time, falling at home to West Iredell  on Thursday— 25-19, 16-25, 13-25 and 24-26.

Mallory Weast had 21 kills and 25 digs for the Cougars (8-1). Kary Hales received serve 33 times and had 29 digs.  Nancy Gamewell had eight kills. Grace Thomas  had 33 assists and three kills.

   Ledford topped Salisbury 25-13, 25-9 and 25-22 in a CCC match on Thursday.

North Rowan lost to South Davidson in a Yadkin Valley Conference match on Thursday, 25-15, 25-27 and 25-19.

   

Jayvee football

Javon Smith scored touchdowns on runs of 12 and 4 yards as Carson’s jayvees rolled against North Rowan, 42-0, on Thursday.

Alex London had a 16-yard scoring run. Aiden Kirchbaum scored on a 2-yard run, and Hunter Burris scored on a 38-yard run. Ben Blumenthal blocked a punt and recovered for a touchdown. Andrew Beaver kicked four PATs, and Jeremy Maldonado kicked two.

Andrew Rollins, Arturo Avalos and Gunnar Michael  (fumble recovery) were defensive standouts for the Cougars (2-1).

South Rowan’s jayvees won against East Davidson, 39-7, on Thursday.

Gabe Poczyk returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

Jackson Deal and Nathan Chrismon scored two TDs apiece for the Raiders (1-1, 1-0).

Deal had scoring runs of 22 and 55 yards. Chrismon had scoring runs of 18 and 57 yards.

Hunter McKinney had a 38-yard scoring run.

Ward Bond kicked three PATs.

Salisbury won against Thomasville, 16-6, on Thursday. Marcus Cook and Reed Fugle scored touchdowns for the Hornets (2-0, 1-0). Vance Honeycutt and Jackson Murphy had 2-point conversions.

Amario Huntley made an interception and led the defense along with  Josh Hill,  Nick Hall and Fugle.

Thomasville got its touchdown on a blocked punt.

Jamison Flowe scored six touchdowns for the Wonders, who overcame a 14-0 deficit.

  Davie  won against West Rowan, 20-6.

Alex Summers threw for 190 yards and three TDs for the War Eagles (2-1). Tyler Snyder made five receptions for 94 yards.

Jayvee volleyball

South Rowan lost to Thomasville, 14-25, 25-22 and 15-8 on Thursday.

Makali Strong  had nine kills for the Raiders (5-5, 3-3 CCC). Kendall Walter had seven kills and 12 digs. Kali Nelson had 30 digs. Mckinley Faw had 12 assists.

Tate Barger had three aces and 18 assists for the Cougars.  Alayna Slusser had five aces and 11 kills. Liza Simmerson had six kills. Jill Dunn received serve 27 times and had 18 digs.

    

Local golf

Donald Allman made a hole-in-one on No. 7 at Rolling Hills on Wednesday.

He used  an 8-iron on the 150-yard hole.

Donnie Webster, Gary Jordan, Gene Adams and   Jim Adams witnessed the shot.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s  varsity girls tennis team defeated Sacred Heart, 7-2.

Millie Wymbs, Kate Burton, Brenna Smith and Karie Downs won singles matches for Salisbury Academy.

Lucy Barr and Cora Wymbs lost tough matches.

Millie Wymbs/Barr, Quinn Davidson/Bailey Zino and Ruby Walser/Peyton Hollar won doubles matches.

Salisbury Academy hosts Summit School on Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.

Mid. school softball

Chloee Stoner had four hits, including a homer, and struck out eight batters to lead North Rowan Middle to a 23-2 win against Knox.

Maddie Grace, Kayla Craven and Akira Jackson were standouts for the Mavericks.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin defeated Southeast, 7-2, to start the season on Thursday.

Ryan Brady, Owen Kesler, Joseph Boehm, Logan Schappell and Will Brashaw won singles matches for Erwin.

Brady/Kesler, Boehm/Schappell and Anthony Grimes/Hunter Moore won in doubles for Erwin.

Southeast got singles wins from Andrew Young and Will Bradshaw.
