Letters: Tax checkoff helps fair elections

Tax checkoff helps fair electionsRight now, North Carolinians have an opportunity to “vote” for fair, ethical elections when paying their state income taxes. Campaign finance scandals, both at the national and state levels, have been very much in the news, and there is concern regarding influence peddling due to candidates’ need to raise elections funds.
The North Carolina Public Campaign Fund provides an alternative “clean” source of funds for state level judicial candidates who agree to limit private fundraising and campaign spending. You can support the fund by saying yes to a $3 checkoff on the state income tax form. Saying yes does not increase your taxes, but directs $3 of the taxes you are already paying to fair elections.
Advise your tax preparer that you wish to support the Public Campaign Fund. Please join me in saying yes to fair elections.

Just a letter to say thanks to the Gem Theatre in Kannapolis. Recently I went to the theater with my husband and son to a “Recession Buster” Wednesday movie, the night when the first 900 people get in absolutely free!
The night we were there, someone from California had seen the story on NBC’s “Nightly News” and called and wanted to buy concessions for the people during the week. The night we went, the first 200 got a free drink and popcorn, and the second 200 got a free popcorn.
My husband, son and I had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves. Just a little break from all the stresses of daily living. Thanks, Gem Theatre ó I will be supporting you soon! There are still some good people out there!
