Celebrating Wallas’ 99th birthday

The past employees of Brad Reagan Inc. came together Saturday, July 21 to visit with their co-worker Wallas Hylton and to celebrate his upcoming 99th birthday. Hylton retired as Merchandise Manager with BRI in 1999 after a 50-year career with the company. Friends came from as far away as Atlanta to be with Wallas this day and share in all the stories and memories of their days together.

Novant Health Rowan Medical Center Auxiliary

 The Novant Health Rowan Medical Center Auxiliary recently awarded Volunteer Scholarships to four area high school graduates that participated in the Junior Volunteer program. The recipients and their parents were honored with a luncheon at the Auxiliary’s July meeting. The Junior Volunteer program at NHRMC allows teens ages 14 to 18 the opportunity to explore and experience various areas of healthcare.
Scholarship recipients are Ellyson Burks, a Gray Stone Day School graduate who plans to attend East Carolina University as a nursing major. Elly is the daughter of Daniel and Jennifer Burks. Mary Kaufmann, daughter of James and Elizabeth Kaufmann, graduated from Salisbury High and plans to attend Davidson College pursing a degree in psychology and philosophy. Chandler Lippard graduated from Salisbury High and is the son of Steve and Stacy Lippard. He plans to attend East Carolina University for a degree in biology. Kaitlyn Thompson is a graduate of East Rowan High School and plans to study nursing at Stanley County Community College. She is the daughter of Kevin Derrick Thompson.

The annual Eagle Reunion is Sunday, Aug. 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the St. Matthews Lutheran Church Hut, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road.  This will be for the descendants of Solomon Eagle.  Bring a covered dish meal and join in the fellowship of other Eagle Descendants. Rowan Republican Women meet the candidates picnic
The Rowan Republican Women will host a Meet the Candidates Picnic 5-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. This is an opportunity for the public to meet Republican candidates running for local and state-wide offices, as well as candidates for North Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Judges. The candidates will be available to speak about current issues, as well as answer questions. Follow the signs to Shelter 6 at Dan Nicholas Park, 6800 Bringle Ferry Road, and enjoy a hotdog, chips, cookies and a drink. For more information call 704-637-3282.

Chapter 4314 AARP Meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 1 p.m.at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

Each month we have a guest speaker. We try to mix entertainment and information to local seniors.

AARP participates in many community service functions. Many volunteer opportunities are available. We are a driving force in educating the community that we are still a vital commodity.  It is a mission to insure healthy active years when possible.

Speaker this month is Rowan Public Library History Room Manager Gretchen Witt. August is our annual Ice Cream Social with  a “make your own sundae” bar.

Guests 50+ welcome. This month only, the annual  joining fee is half price.

St. John’s Seasons gift shop benefits Senior Academy

St. John’s Lutheran Church Senior Seasons Gift Shop was formed to raise money for the Senior Adult Education and Activity Program. It focuses on suppliers who donate a portion of their proceeds to international missions. The monies in this “locked fund” are only used for the Senior Adult Ministry that is open to the entire community.
St. John’s received grants from the Synod for two programs, one-time gifts to seed the programs and get them started. The long range goal is for them to become self-sustaining.
Proceeds from the Gift Shop help fund the Senior Academy, which offers a curriculum of Bible study and other continuing education.
This Fall, classes will be offered on writing one’s memoir and another entertainment type class on local folklore, including a cemetery tour and a tour of the Rowan Museum.
The Memoir class is $40 and the Folklore class is $30. These fees cover expenses for speakers and materials. The Academy, special meals or other events are supplemented from the Gift Shop Fund.
While not always free, efforts are made to make this ministry as affordable as possible so that anyone can participate. Scholarships are available for classes and trips.
The Senior Seasons Academy is a 6-week adult learning program, offered twice per year, that is open to anyone in the community. The Senior Seasons Ministry also offers day trips, get togethers, and other activities.
The shop is currently offering end-of-season discounts on mission-related items including children’s toys, books, handbags, baby gifts, scarves, toiletries, African baskets, greeting cards, candles, sachet pouches and more.

Pinto Stampede 2018 culminates in Concord
