N.C. State senior Shayla Fields (Salisbury) was named to the All-ACC second team on Monday.
Fields ranks third in the ACC in scoring at 17.5 points a game, the highest figure for an N.C. State player in a decade.
Fields scored 20 or more points 10 times this season, including a career-high 33 against Charlotte.
Fields leads the ACC in minutes played. She’s averaged 40.4 per game in league games, an amazing figure made possible by N.C. State’s three overtime contests.
Fields ranks sixth in the league in 3-pointers, eighth in assists, 10th in steals and 12th in free-throw percentage.
Fields scored 14 points in N.C. State’s 58-52 loss to Boston College on Sunday that wrapped up the regular season. She’ll lead the Wolfpack against Wake Forest at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the ACC tournament.
Fields was the most prolific scorer in Rowan County history during her four seasons at Salisbury, pouring in 2,783 points.
– College women’s hoops
South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 11 points in an 82-75 victory against Florida A&M on Monday.
– College men’s basketball
Coker’s Michael Gore (South Rowan) scored six points on 3-for-4 shooting before fouling out in an 89-80 loss to Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas tournament on Monday.
The loss ended Coker’s season.
– Western Regional
Western Regional 1A girls and 2A boys games that were originally scheduled for tonight have been postponed by weather issues.
The 1A girls games now will be played Wednesday, while the 2A boys games were moved to Thursday.
Salisbury’s girls are still set to play Mitchell at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.
If Salisbury advances to the regional final, it will play the East Davidson-Smoky Mountain winner at 2 p.m. on Saturday at UNC Greensboro’s Fleming Gym.
The press conference scheduled for Monday in Greensboro was cancelled.
– College baseball
Lenoir-Rhyne (13-4) moved up to eighth in the Collegiate Baseball National Poll. The Bears have won nine in a row.
Senior Zach Glass (Salisbury) is batting .328 with 18 RBIs for the Bears.
* UNC Pembroke junior Rudy Brown (South Rowan), a transfer from Surry Community College, is 3-0 with a 3.06 ERA. Brown has struck out 22 batters while walking only four.
* UNCP Freshman Matt Ingold (South) hasn’t played a lot but has gotten on base when he has. Ingold is 2-for-3 with four walks.
* Lander freshman Billy Veal (North Rowan) is 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA. The Bearcats are ranked 19th nationally.
n Catawba junior Craige Lyerly (East Rowan) is batting .442 with eight RBIs and is 7-for-8 on steal attempts.
* Catawba senior right-hander Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus) is 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and three walks.
* Mars Hill freshman Alex Britt (Salisbury) has been a workhorse for the Lions, logging 25 innings already.
He is 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA and has struck out 21 batters while walking eight.
* Northwest Florida State’s Keegan Linza (North) notched his first win of the season on Saturday.
Linza, who transferred from South Carolina, is 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA after four outings. He’s fanned 22 while walking four.
* Lance Emert (Davie) is batting .417 for Wilkes Community College (11-2). Jacob Dobbins (North) is batting .409, Daniel Welch (NW Cabarrus) is hitting .400, and Jason Brown (A.L. Brown) checks in at .368 for the Cougars. Brown has two homers and 12 RBIs despite only four starts.
* South Carolina sophomore Whit Merrifield (Davie) tripled in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Clemson.
Merrifield has reached base in more than half of his at-bats so far and is hitting .364.
* Belmont junior Daniel Wagner (South) leads the Bruins with a .417 batting average after seven games. He has four doubles.
* N.C. State junior Wade Moore (West Rowan) began the season 3-for-15 with two stolen bases.
* Charlotte freshman Justin Roland (East) already has knocked in five runs, although he’s struggled a bit in the field in the early going.
– Pro baseball
Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) had a very strong showing for the Lobos de Arecibo in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
Ward could open this season with Minnesota’s Triple-A team in Rochester.
* Lefty Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) is likely to open the season with Minnesota’s advanced Class-A team in Ft. Myers, Fla.
* Bobby Parnell (East) pitched out of one jam and worked two scoreless innings in relief for the New York Mets against Detroit on Saturday.
Parnell signed a new one-year contract with the Mets over the weekend.
– Bank of N.C. tournament
Twenty area middle school basketball teams competed in the Bank of North Carolina Championships at Davidson County Day School.
* Statesville Christian won the championship in the boys varsity division.
DCDS lost to Statesville in the semifinals and finished fourth. Conor Honeycutt hit seven 3-pointers and scored 37 points in the tournament for the Diamondbacks, who finished 18-15. Honeycutt was all-tournament. Also playing well for the Diamondbacks were Coleman Hayes, Celexus Long, Kenrick Jobe, Tim Burges and Harrison Baucom.
* The Cabarrus Nuggets won the varsity girls division with a 48-34 championship-game victory over the Pink Cougars.
Kannapolis Middle star Aaliyah Spears and Knox seventh-grade phenom Brielle Blair led the Nuggets. Paris Johnson and Cacy Honeycutt also played well for the Nuggets.
The Pink Cougars, made up of eighth-graders headed to Carson, were led by Southeast’s Allison Blackwell, Tyesha Phillips and Sidney Grkman and Sacred Heart’s Kelly Dulkoski. Blackwell and Phillips made all-tournament.
* DCDS won the jayvee girls division, topping Sacred Heart 36-31 behind the play of Jordan Chavis, Rebecca Cope and Emerson Hayes.
Erin Ansbro, Kate Sullivan, Annie Habeeb and Maria Strobel led the Dolphins.
– Postponements
Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball game against Anderson in the Conference Carolinas tournament that was scheduled for Monday was moved back to tonight because of weather issues.
n Pfeiffer’s women were postponed again. They’ll play at Coker in the CC tournament tonight.
– Cancellations
Snow wiped out Catawba’s softball doubleheader scheduled for Monday and the Rendleman golf tournament that was scheduled to take place Monday and today.
– Prep basketball wrapup
The 28-2 record posted by the Salisbury boys was the third-best record in school history.
The 28 wins in a row posted by the Hornets tied the school record for wins during a single season.
The Hornets have streaks of 35, 37 and 38 that overlapped seasons.
Brandon Abel finished his career as the No. 8 scorer in school history with 1,182 points.
Sophomore Darien Rankin’s 477 points this season tied him for the ninth-highest single-season scoring output in school history.
Salisbury’s CCC regular-season championship was the 17th in school history. The Hornets added the CCC tournament crown, the 14th tournament title in school history. The Hornets have won three CCC tourneys in a row and have won four regular-season crowns in the last six years.
* West Rowan’s K.J. Sherrill finished his career third on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,596 points.
Sherrill scored 554 points as a senior, the 10th-best single-season offensive production in school history.
West tied Lake Norman for the NPC regular-season title to claim its 19th conference championship.
* South’s Hunter Morrison finished his career with 863 points, third-best total in school history. He trails only Carlos Dixon and Larry Lentz so he’s the school’s all-time leader for players under 6-foot-6.
Morrison’s 519 points this season marked the second-best total at South.
* Carson junior Darius Moose broke the school marks for single-season points (487), points in a game (36) and points in a career (1,229).
The Cougars set new marks for points scored in a game (81) and fewest points allowed in a game (36).
* Daniel Plummer scored 426 points for the 15th-best single season in East Rowan boys history.
