Intimidators rolling; Salisbury soccer still perfect; big day for UNCG’s Lyerly

SALISBURY, Md. — Anthony Villa had two hits and two RBIs, and Blake Battenfield allowed just two hits over six innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-0 on Monday.

Jose Nin got Ryan Ripken to fly out with runners on first and third to end the game for his first save of the season.

Battenfield (1-1) struck out eight and walked one to get the win.

Legion softball

Rowan County Legion Lady tryouts will be held on Sunday, May 6, at 5  p.m.

Tryouts will be at East Rowan High.

College golf

PINEHURST — The UNC Greensboro men’s golf team jumped from third to first place in the Southern Conference Championship on Monday.

UNCG freshman Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 2-under 70 on Monday at Pinehurst No. 9. He shot 73  on Sunday and is tied for first place with three players, including teammates Bryce Hendrix and Josh Stockwell.

  Lyerly had one bogey on Monday while posting birdies on No. 8, 10 and 11.

UNCG will start the final round today on  No. 1 at 8:15 a.m. and will be paired with Chattanooga.

Prep soccer

Salisbury braved adverse conditions on a windy, rain-soaked Monday to defeat Ledford 3-1 at Ludwig Stadium.

Salisbury (17-0, 15-0 Central Carolina Conference) got goals from Ellen Simons, Julia Honeycutt, and Freya Obermueller and assists from Anna Grace Woolly, Maria Capito  and Bess Bryan.

Ledford got on the board with just under eight minutes remaining as the Hornets got a number of reserves on the field.

Salisbury got excellent play from Simons, Elle Kennedy, Piper Muire and Lillie Rusher.

  Salisbury’s magic number is down to one. The Hornets have a three-game lead with three games left in the CCC race. Salisbury can clinch  the title at home against East Davidson on Wednesday.

In East Rowan’s recent 1-0 win against West Rowan, Freshman Lauren Trayah scored for the Mustangs. Jackie  Lynn Lowry had the assist.

South Rowan’s game against Thomasville was postponed to tonight.

Fishing

Salisbury Academy’s Harrison McCall and Will Webb won the North Carolina Junior  Bassmaster tournament held at Lake Norman.

They qualified for  the Bassmaster  Junior National Championship to be held  at Carroll County Lake in Huntingdon, Tenn., on July 31-Aug. 1.

The local team of  Hunter Alexander and Hayden Hammond placed second in the state and also qualified for nationals.

Local golf

  In McCanless Couples play, the team of Hal Jordan, Walt Kincaid, Harry Owens and Jan Godwin out-paced the team of Terrol Kendall, Calvin Smith, David Huneycutt, Pam and Ralph Carver by a slim margin.  Pam Carver had closest to the pin.

Postponements

Most high school action was postponed on Monday.

A decision will be made early today regarding the county track meet scheduled at East Rowan.
