From staff reportsCatawba’s Hall of Fame volleyball coach Ginger Hamric got her 400th victory when the Indians swept Brevard on Friday 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. Catawba (12-6, 6-2) got double-figure kills from Melissa Powers, Mai Zoua Lo and Melissa Griffith.
n Catawba swept Newberry 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 on Saturday. Powers had 14 kills and 10 digs. Lo registered 11 digs and 12 kills. Megan Courson produced 29 assists.
n Alyssa Retundie’s goal lifted Catawba’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 SAC victory over Carson-Newman on Saturday. Lindsay Webster made four saves for Catawba (9-3-1, 4-0-1).n Prep cross country
East Rowan’s boys finished fifth in the Tanglewood Invitational on Saturday.
Ross Oden was 11th in 17:52.22 and teammates Eli Walton and Cole Honeycutt finished 12th and 13th, respectively, to lead East to a fifth-place finish in the Invitational Division.
East’s girls were 10th in the Invitational Division. Taylor Arey finished 29th to lead the Mustangs.
n Philip Tonseth finished seventh in 18:19.64 and John Ramsey was 12th to lead Salisbury’s boys to a sixth-place finish in the Open Division at Tanglewood.
Salisbury’s girls finished seventh in the Open Division. Katheryn Shields was seventh in 21:35.44. Katelyn Horning was 20th and Emily Shields 28th.
n College football
Freshman Justin Avery (West Rowan) made four tackles and forced a fumble to help UNC Pembroke beat West Virginia Wesleyan 36-14 on Saturday.
n Ibn Ali (Salisbury) made two tackles and forced a fumble on special teams for Western Carolina in a 28-21 loss against Furman on Saturday.
n Prep volleyball
Haili Everhart had 18 digs, Carsen Byrd had six kills, Mallory Drew had 12 digs and five kills, and Byrd, Whitley Barrier and Nicolle Bradway combined for five blocks for East Rowan in a 3-0 loss against first-place North Iredell.
n South Rowan swept Mooresville to stay tied for second. Kayla Morrow had 10 kills, 11 digs and served for 23 points to lead the Raiders (15-4, 12-4).
Taylor May had 12 kills, and Molly Garrett had eight.
Krista Haywood had 27 assists and 12 digs.
n There will be an informational meeting for the upcoming Junior Olympic Volleyball season with the Rowan Volleyball Club on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Carson at 9:30 am for 3rd-12th graders.

n Gray Stone
Gray Stone’s boys cross country team won the Stanly County Meet held at Oakboro District Park.
Leading Gray Stone were Dalton Wally (2nd, 17:24), Patrick Sullivan (sixth), Michael Tedeschi (seventh), Kaleb Medlin (eighth) and Mygel Bergstresser (10th). All six made All-Stanly County.Gray Stone’s girls finished third behind South Stanly and West Stanly.
Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer finished first overall with a time of 21:38.
Gray Stone’s Janna Featherstone was (fith) and Mary Bergstresser (12th). They joined Latimer on the all-county team.
Gray Stone’s Raelynn Perry was 15th.
The Rocky River Conference Meet is Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant.
n FCCA Rowan 95 Soccer
The FCCA Rowan 95 boys soccer team has compiled a 5-0-1 record at the midpoint of its season.
Playing its first season in the Second Southwest Classic division of NCYSA, the club has played teams from Gastonia, Charlotte, Asheville and Waynesville.
Leading the offensive attack are John Canipe, Lucas Capito, Bobby Cardelle, Clint Comadoll, Angel Dominguez, Nick Greene, Sean Mahaffey, Philip Simons, Zack Sukkasem and Carlos Zanudo.
Providing outstanding defense are Sam Cooley, Ian Lins, Garrett Owen, Colt Sherrill and goalie Banks Fisher.

n College men’s basketball
Catawba is ranked 20th and Lenoir-Rhyne 14th in the preseason Division II Bulletin National Top 25 poll.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Duke in a preseason game, while Catawba takes on N.C. State.
n Youth wrestling
The Rowan County Youth Wrestling League will register boys in Grades K-6 on Nov. 1 during YFL Games at North Rowan High and on Nov. 3-6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hall Gym. Registration fee is $65. Contact Jason Hinson at 980-521-1968 or Tim Pittman at 704-267-4125.
n North host for 5K
North Rowan’s volleyball team is the host for the Cavalier 5K on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.
