Former U.S. senator and Vietnam war hero Max Cleland of Georgia will campaign Friday and Saturday for state Sen. Kay Hagan, a Greensboro Democrat running for the U.S. Senate.
Hagan will speak about keeping promises to the military and veterans during stops on her “Best Interests, Not the Special Interests” tour.
Cleland served in the U.S. Senate from 1997 until 2003.
An Army captain, Cleland was severely wounded fighting in Vietnam. After recovering from his injuries, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate, was director of the U.S. Veteran’s Administration under President Carter and also served as Georgia’s Secretary of State.
On Friday in Raleigh, Hagan will host her sixth “Veterans’ Town Hall.” Her seventh will be held Saturday in Winston-Salem. Cleland will be at both stops.
Hagan’s father, brother, and husband, Chip, served in the Navy, and Chip Hagan also is a Vietnam veteran. Her father-in-law is a retired two-star general in the Marine Corps, and she has two nephews on active duty.
