Portrait exhibit
There will be an opening reception 5-7 p.m. Friday at Rail Walk Gallery, 409-413 N. Lee St., for an exhibit of portraits painted by area artists as gifts to the families of the Abundant Living Day Care folks.

Children’s art
SPENCER ó The Green Goat Gallery and Blue Ewe Yoga Studio in Spencer is hosting a series of Saturday afternoon workshops for children, July 19 through Aug. 9.
* July 19, 1-3 p.m., award-winning artist Sue Davis will teach children how to make and customize their own kaleidoscope and will illuminate the inner workings of this favorite Victorian pastime in “Put your Own Stuff Inside.” For children ages 8 to 12, the cost is $25 per child. Class is limited to 10 participants.
* July 26, 1-2:30 p.m., Salisbury muralist and portrait painter Carolyn Kirkman will lead a beginning painting workshop for budding artists who will be introduced to mixing color and elementary painting techniques. Each child will create a small framed picture to take home. For children ages 4 to 7, the cost is $22. Class is limited to 8 participants.
* Aug. 2, 1-3 p.m., children will learn to paint colorful, multilayered abstract paintings using painter’s tape and other simple tools in Annette Ragone Hall’s workshop “Experimental Watercolor Technique.” For children age 12 and older, the cost is $35 per child. Class is limited to 10 participants.
n Aug. 9, 1-2:30 p.m., Anne Waters (CYT) will lead a beginning yoga practice where children will learn elementary breathing and relaxation techniques and basic poses based on animals and plants. For children ages 6 to 11, the cost is $15 per child. Class is limited to 10 participants.
All workshops will be conducted at the Green Goat Gallery & Blue Ewe Yoga Studio, located at 516 S. Salisbury Ave., in Spencer. All materials and a light snack are included in the cost of the workshops. Scholarships are available.

Story telling
KANNAPOLIS ó The City of Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Ike’s Construction and the Cabarrus County Public Library-Kannapolis Branch, is excited to present another Stories Under the Stars session as part of the 2008 Ike’s Construction Summer Events Series.
On Saturday at 7 p.m. North Carolina’s own Lloyd Arneach will be entertaining audiences with his stories and history of Cherokee history on the patio of the Library, 850 Mountain St., Kannapolis.
Born and raised on the Reservation in Cherokee, Arneach learned how to tell stories when he was a young child. In 1993, he transformed his passion and hobby into a full-time career as both storyteller and historian. Ranging from “old stories” of the Cherokee to contemporary stories that he has learned along the way, Arneach’s performances are humorous, informative and moving.

‘Bachelor’ casting call
CHARLOTTE ó The ABC-TV series “The Bachelor” is now searching for Charlotte’s most eligible women to appear on the next installment.
WSOC-TV Channel 9 will hold a casting call 5:30-8:30 p.m., July 24 during the Alive After five event at the Wachovia Plaza, 301 S. Tryon St.
Applicants must bring a completed application, filled out in ink, along with a copy of a valid ID and recent photos to the casting event. Photos will not be returned.

Peckman featured
Salisbury artist Whitney Peckman is being featured in the world’s largest outdoor sculpture show: The Loveland Sculpture Invitational, Aug. 8, 9 and 10 in Loveland Colo.
Peckman creates painted vessel-sculptures as well as contemporary and mixed-media paintings. She is one of the founding members of EastSquare ArtWorks (ESA), a contemporary fine art collaborative and design hub located at 122 E. Innes St.

Uwharrie Players
ALBEMARLE ó The Uwharrie Players presents its summer musical, “Children of Eden.”
This family musical is by Stephen Schwartz, the creator of “Wicked,” “Godspell” and “Pippin.” Freely based on the story of Genesis, “Children of Eden” is a frank, heartfelt and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and their children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that “the hardest part of love… is letting go.”
The show, which includes nearly 60 cast members ranging from third graders to adults, is directed by Jack Stevenson with Virgie Taylor as music director.
Performances will be July 25, 26, 31, and Aug. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m., and a July 27 performance at 2:30 p.m. at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center located at 26032-B Newt Road., Albemarle.

MASGA Steel Jam
KANNAPOLIS ó The Mid-Atlantic Steel Guitar Association will host a day of steel guitar Aug. 2-3 at the Kannapolis Moose Lodge on Old Beatty Ford Road.
Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., there will be performances from many steel guitarists.
Featured guitarist Jeff Whittington of Concord will perform at 2 p.m. At 8 p.m. there will be an informal dance.
Performances will continue Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including The REvelations from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
